I submitted a request for payment last week for a project that was already funded. Something happened and the payment apparently was attempted six times. The client messaged me yesterday and asked me to refund the additional 5x overpayments, but I never received any payment. The pending payments shows one pending payment apparently coming on March 26; and the other 5 will post on March 27.
Did this somehow slow down receipt of my payment? What happened to upwork that it now takes almost a week to receive payment for work - and then another 2-3 days or more after that to actually receive an actual deposit payment?
I have a screenshot if any support staff see this and wants to follow up.

That is easy to fix. Respond to your client that the 5payment will post on 27th. You can only issue refund once the payments are posted. Not before that.

That's what I messaged back. I told them the payments were still pending. I'm just more concerned that it caused a delay and that payments have been slower this year.

Not at all.
What happened is that the payment which was released from Escrow went to pending with the security hold immediately, whereas the 5 others had to be actually charged and processed because other than the already funded milestone, Upwork did not have that money yet.
As they charge in charging runs, and the client probably paid you after the last charging run, the money actually got charged the next day, hence the difference.
