It's one of the oldest scams on the net (fake check scam) and you have been violating Upwork's terms of service by communicating outside the platform before a contract was in place.
Essentially they want to send you a fake check and will be wanting you to then send real money to their "local vendor" (who is obviously themselves) before the fake check obviously bounces.
