Around the time the thread titled "Proposals are still jacked" was started (approx. 1:45pm. Aug. 19th EST USA), I accepted an invitation; thus, submitted a proposal. The proposal does show on my Proposals page. I appear in the client's list of "Proposals," which used to be called "Applicants." Maybe when it was changed from "Proposals" to "Applicants" is when the displaying of proposals problems started.

It is important to note that initially my name appeared in the client's list of "Proposals" as a result of the invitation. Therefore, whether or not it appears now as a result submitting a proposal (application) is unknown.

NEW PROBLEM: With all invited freelancers appearing in the client's list of proposals as a result of the client's invitations, how do freelancers know how many applicants (competitors) actually exist since invitations do not always result in applications?

ADDED Aug. 20th: There has been a change on my freelancer's Profiles page. Now, there are three sections: Active Candidacies, Invitations to Interview, and Submitted Proposals (Only "Invitations to Interview" and "Proposals" were there before; at least on my Profiles page). Accepted Interviews are now moved to the Active Candidacies section descrined as: "These are proposals that you are discussing with a client" -- a welcome change. The "New Problem" mentioned above still exists.

I applied for 3 jobs this morning. One is showing on my proposal list. 2 are missing. Oh well.

Yes when a clent invites individuals it seems to me you have not chance and you wasted your connects.

I know i have been invited and see others bidding and feel bad for them.

I woud say we have NO chance with client inviting freelancers. Not sure why job even gets posted?

I have won contracts against invited Freelancers .... More than once!

Just because a client invites a few people does not mean he can't find something better amongst the ones that apply.

Maybe he just didn't SEE them to invite them when originally doing the invitations.

Also the invited freelancers may decine, or turn out to be not as good a fit as the client thought.

The fact that a client invited people would never put me off, he may just have clicked on the links in the email he got suggesting freelancers to invite....

Petra, I don't apply to jobs with Client invites.

But you are correct. You can get the job if you are more talented and the client has has the ability to understand who has the better skills.

I prefer to stay away. Some clients prefer a certain price range or country. Factor in Client history and pay rate and usually i move on.

Your profile is not public. What type of work do you do?

How weird, it's set to Upwork users only, you're the second one to say it is "hidden"  in 2 days...

Lemme set it to public. Done now!

I translate, write, edit and manage  teams.

๐Ÿ™‚

I feel like i am in a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific and i have no wind.

No Upwork messages, invites, proposals or wind. Dead calm.

Boy I sound sad.

I will make no more proposal, Upwork is offically jacked!

Anyway Petra, i still can see your profile. Upwork is keeping you hidden.

Maybe its another bug?

Petra, I thought the "hidden" folders were no longer in use. Maybe, maybe not...I forget for certain what the status is. Anyway, for some the profiles still seem to be missing.

Ronald T:

I see you are experienced and very successful here on the Upwork platform.

Could I ask you to grant a favor: to share your perspective with those of us who have selected Upwork as a place to do business, and setup fairly recently?  I cannot find anything in the usual places, e.g. Twitter feeds, discussion forums, announcements, etc.

My questions are:

- Is this type major outage something that happens on a regular basis?  Or is it a one-time event?

- Does it appear to be related to their integration with eLance?

- There are other major bugs concurrent with the breakdown of matching clients and contractors, things like my portfolio order shifting randomly.  Has the Upwork site stable?  Did it become unstable when eLance and ODesk combined?

Whatever perspective you feel comfortable sharing would be appreciated, since Upwork is not communicating after 5 days.  All I get from their support team is a polite "we're aware of the problem and working on it".  They have not provided me with telephone support privledges yet.

If you don't choose to answer, I understand and of course that's no problem:)

Thanks!

Steve B.

PS, Of course feedback from others experienced with Upwork is welcome too.

Steve B:

Your questions are:

- Is this type major outage something that happens on a regular basis?  Or is it a one-time event?

As a seasoned [old...lol] veteran of the Internet, from the days when Archie and Veronica were still in diapers, I must say that Upwork (and previously oDesk) is one of the worst websites I have dealt with. More specifically:

Connectivity issues and outages are common. Additions, deletions, and changes often result in new bugs due to a lack of effective software quality assurance practices. Upwork communication with members is fragmented, lacking, and untimely. Nonetheless, fortunately, problems like the one with proposals are rare.

- Does it appear to be related to their integration with eLance?

No, the oDesk platform exhibited the same lack of effective software quality assurance practices.

- There are other major bugs concurrent with the breakdown of matching clients and contractors, things like my portfolio order shifting randomly.  Has the Upwork site stable?  Did it become unstable when eLance and ODesk combined?

Again, no, before the merger the oDesk platform exhibited the same lack of effective software quality assurance practices. Actually, I believe the oDesk site started to become more problematic around 2012. Members can still access the old oDesk forums from before the introduction of this "Community" [forum] platform. From the old forums, some of the same members reporting the same and new problems that those members ares still reporting today.

By the way, I appreciate your comments; however, I have not been "very successful here on the Upwork" since around 2012 and before due to the changes in policies and practices implemented by oDesk (now Upwork). Finding the best jobs and quality clients on Upwork has become a chore--too time consuming--poor, non-relevant search results. My work off-Upwork has been far more lucrative.

Will things here change for the good? I hope so; however, I see little evidence that it will.

Ron,

Thanks for the perspective. I'll take the occasion to repeat that all the problems you describe were endemic to Elance, as well. New arrivals who complainโ€”justifiablyโ€”about reliability have no basis for claiming Elance's superiority in this regard.

Best,

Michael

Thanks for the insight Douglas. I was never too successful on Elance so I never really got a chance to experience the pros and cons. It's not coming back, but I still miss the old oDesk circa 2012 and earlier. It was there when I really needed it. I'm thankful for that.

lol I love to see the old timers. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was an old school Usenet troll. I miss those days!

I'm guessing they have a lot of things that need to be fixed, and they are stuck in that place that's not fun to be in. Lots of bugs, department heads screaming, and they are forced to "fix" fast and often. Implement strict change control and fixes are deployed slower, and the business won't allow it.

At Citrix, they had two meetings a week where at least 1 team member had to attend a change control meeting that was basically "Why did this system break and what did you do to fix it?" So, like 20ish people in a room among peers and execs explainiing their screwups, and it if the director had a problem, he had no qualms about calling you out. Made for fewer mistakes but more finger pointing. I, being the sweet talker that I am, was  the noob voted to be the rep for my team.  I hated those meetings.

It's really hard to move from "have lots of bugs and need to fix them fast" to a stable environment unless you put deployment times on lockdown and add lengthy testing time. I'm assuming they shortcut it to fix problems fast. The problem just keeps escalating since there is pressure to fix fast but weak QA to stop it from continuing.

Feel bad for the devs. It's a tough environment to be in!

I relate to everything you said Jennifer. If they have adequately established and documented policies, procedures, and work instructions for change control, then, possibly they are not following their own requirements. Some of the problems that resulted from changes seemed to be examples of a complete lack of any formal change control processes having been put in place. I do not think they even have a Quality department in the conventional sense (especially one that runs an audit function) . If they do, it has no "teeth."

Ron aka LanWanMan

Ronald T,

THANKS for the education!  That brings me up to speed.  Sorry to learn that the Upwork platform is a long-term buggy mess.  I was hoping this is a short-term situation with their platform remaining broken-down day after day, due to their merger with eLance.

If there was some good news in there though, it is that this 6-day breakdown in Upwork's core functionality is not commonplace.  But this morning they announced it is fixed, and as far as i can see it is not.

I do notice the a good quantity of project 'total budget estimates' seem to be $10-$50 and that a lot of the clients have paid their contractors and average of $3-$5 per hour. It does take a lot of time to wade through it all.

I am not an expert in user interface design, but what's the hey?  Like in this user forum?  Trying to track threads I feel a bit like I'm using AOL dial-in BBS and it's 1988:)

I will remain optimistic... ๐Ÿ™‚  Thanks again for stepping up to give a relative newcomer some perspective on what's going on here.

Steve B.

Steve B.

Regarding the proposal issues, I'm still not sure if everything is fixed or not. When you get chance to use the NEW messaging [chat?] system for communication between freelancers and clients, I would be interested in learning about your thoughts on that. Actually, I'm still not sure if everything is fixed with those features either. Following things on this NEW forum (aka Community) gets a bit cumbersome sometimes.

Wondering if anyone has an update. I don't have that message that was on the Job Feed page all day yesterday. I was gone most of the morning and am not sure what is the latest.

Dare I bid? I have seen a couple of interesting things today.

One I submitted on Monday is still lost.

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.โ€• George Orwell

At this point I am not sending proposals for jobs, nor am I posting any jobs as a client. I have not seen any kind of announcement from Upwork to give us the "all clear."

I hope that when everything is back to functioning properly with regards to the display and delivery of job proposals, that Upwork will provide a very noticeable announcement to tell us so.

 <big sigh> Hear, hear!

And if they don't, bad dog!

<ahem>

Pandora, PH suggested in another post that Upwork should post when the problems in question are resolved. Considering how fragmented the threads on the topic have become, it is a good idea. As far as I can tell, the bidding process including proposais is working OK for me except to the "New Problem" I wrote about in an earlier post. However, I have not yet heard back from clients that I sent propsals to.

Thanks Ron. I quickly browsed the other thread this morning  before bidding on two jobs.

I can say that both bids seem to have been posted sucessefully, though I don't expect to hear from the prospective clients quickly.

Not sure if I came across your "other" new problem yet, but good luck!

Pandora, the other NEW problem that I mentioned appears in the second post within this thread.

I was also wishing that I'll get some announcement from upwork, but now, I don't know.

I am also considering "not to apply". I was having messaging with one of my previous clients and he gave me an offer directly to me via Upwork (without any interview or anything) and I accepted. ๐Ÿ™‚ Now, I am not thinking about upwork will announce "all clear" or not. I'll be just looking and reading this "Community Discussions".

I want to thank upwork that they are having this "Community Discussions" before having so many issues on their site.

Yes, Petra... your profile is definitely hidden.

Have you tried CHANGING the visability setting to something that it isn't right now, saving that, logging out, logging back in, and then changing it to the most public-possible setting?

How very strange... It has always been set to "Upwork users only!"

Petra, I just (Thursday, lunchtime) checked and I can view your profile just fine. Having said this, I have tried to see yours at least twice in the last couple of weeks, and both of those other times when I loaded your Community Page, the View Profile button was Gray, and did not work. Now, however, it's Green, and works.

I'd like to note I that I corrasponded with a very very new user from Elance earlier today, and I thought her's was private because her Commuity Page was showed the grey View Profile button.  I was able to find her via Freelancer search using her name. Oddly, she did tell me her Visibility was set to Upwork Users only.

In the past, I am not 100% that is a normal result (on the Community page), but I can't confirm that.

Hi Preston! Dumb question on my part: When members say proposals are "hidden," do they mean "hidden" as in the "hiddne" folders? Or, are they just missing, which is what I think is meant when someone says "hidden." Also, I don't recall if the "hidden" folders are no longer in use. Anyone know for sure?

From my perspective, the core functionality of the Upwork platform - matching projects with freelancers - has been down for five days now.

I posted proposals yesterday and today; all vanished. Another half dozen in the four days prior.

It really amazes me that there is zero communication from Upwork's senior management to those of us who are moving our livelihood to this platform.  It's been five full days now; that should N-E-V-E-R happen.  A day or two, ok once in a great while.  But five full days with no comment?

I'm relatively new to Upwork (6 weeks / 100 hours / 4 projects completed) but this is seriously shaking my confidence that I made a good decision to concentrate my project acquisition efforts here.  I was just becoming an enthusiast, now this.

If they would tell us what is going on and give us some visibility into the outlook, that would go a long ways.  "best efforts" isn't going to cut it after 5 days.  Crisis management 101!

Hi All,

We have gotten a confirmation that all the proposals that were stored but not delivered properly due to the technical issue have been processed by the system and should be showing now. If you still notice that your proposals don't show, please let us know.

We apologize for the inconvenience and the delay.

Valerie thanks for the update, glad to hear they feel they are making progress.

From my perspective, the missing proposals problem has not been fixed.  Yesterday, I submitted 3 proposals; only 1 of them is showing in my proposal queue.

Are others seeing an improvement?

Hi Steve,

I just checked your Proposals list and compared it with your Connects History. It appears all the proposals you have sent in the last 5 days show properly. I would suggest you clear your cache and cookies to make sure the page you are viewing is up-to-date.

Thank you!

Thank you for the notification, Valeria.

I realize it may not be a proiorty for the Upwork PR team, but this was a very bad problem for several days. I can't even begin to imagine how much money was lost from all the short-term quick jobs that client were posting during this time. And new users from Elance who were just starting to post/bid on jobs very likely are wondering why they bothered in the first place.

I seriously hope some kind of blog post about this, or a mass email to everyone, is in the works.
