Hello. Recently I had finished contract. It went ok, the client gave me 5 starts public but there was no text in the feedback. Does that affects by JSS? Thanks

The 5 stars is your feedback.  You don't need written feedback.

Written feedback has no material impact on your JSS since Upwork's algorithm is unable to parse it meaningfully.

Until, of course, our God-Emperor Upwork generates the ultimate artificial intelligence neural network-based JSS algorithm robot that uses keywords in your feedback to determine how good of a freelancer you are. Wouldn't be surprised.

Public feedback / stars etc are largely (possibly entirely) irrelevant for the JSS anyway. nice feedback is eye-candy on the profile and makes us feel good.

The private feedback is what affects the JSS.

So this means that the public feedback is basically for show? What it counts mostly is private feedback? That´s unfair! A client may give you 5 stars publicaly but only 8 (1-10) privately, or worst, shows that you had made a good job/impression but in the end stabs you in that back. They should at least weight the very same thing as JSS goes.

Clients have an incentive to lie in their public feedback (to keep freelancers happy, to keep potential for future contracts intact, and to maintain cordial relations) but they have no incentive to lie in their private feedback. This is why private feedback will be significantly more accurate in gauging a freelancer's abilities. I do agree that public feedback should have some weightage, though.

Upwork's JSS does not currently work that way.

But you are allowed to create your own websites with rating systems that work this way.

"Fair" is relative.

As we all work with the same system, that means the JSS calculation is the same for everyone, and in that way it's perfectly fair.
