So I was contacted after submitting a bid by a company, I have done everything asked and they hired me, however not through this website. Once i was told i was hired they proposal for the job on this website says no longer valid. Question is (because I have a weird feeling about the legitimacy of this company) how do you know if the company is real or a scam? Thanks in advance!

Hi Amber,
Working or getting paid outside of Upwork with a client who you have establish contact on Upwork is a violation of our TOS.
One of our team members will reach out to you directly where you can share more details with us about this and our team will investigate it further. I would also suggest to check out this resources and learn more about Upwork. Thank you.

If somebody is asking you to break the rules and do something that could cause you to be permanently kicked off of Upwork, does it matter if they are a "legitimate" company?

Dear Amber, we all know that you came here (forum) looking for info in order not to be scammed, but you are helping this scammer to scam Upwork as well, you get that part, don't you? and you said it out loud in an open and public forum, that does not benefit you at all!
You met this "client" through Upwork, what's the point to be here (upwork) if you're going to be "hired" outside, and violate T&S?
It really does not matter is this client is good or bad, legal or not, in the second this "client" "hired" you outside upwork that by itself should give a hint, and you should run, and run real fast!

I bet it's another "We send you check fo mini office" thing, the OPs profile fits their MO to a T.

Amber:
Don't let this experience get you down.
EVERY person who is new to Upwork makes rookie mistakes. I certainly did.
I've been here a few years and sometimes I still make mistakes.
Just not rookie mistakes. I call them "veteran" mistakes.
