Reason for Low JSS?

Hi,

I am just a starting freelancer here at Upwork. I had to accept small jobs because finding contracts without a high success score is difficult. Had to do my best to always receive 5 stars.

My question is, why is my job success score 67%? I have 1 job rated 4.85, all others are rated at 5 stars. How is it logical that I would be scored at 67%?

This is really frustrating as there are no other indication as to why my score should be this low. I have no cancelled contracts.

Please help me understand as this score would have really helped me find bigger jobs.
Thank you

How many completed contracts have you completed in total?

Unfortunately that is a common misconception.

Generally you find the most demanding, difficult to work with and downright mean clients in the cheap, low cost segment. It's a risky segment.

In absence of any "nothing paid" contracts it must be poor private feedback that caused your JSS.

All you can do now is to be careful who you work with an make sure every contract goes 100% great.

I have 10 completed contracts but 7 of them under 1 client.

Some of your clients (probably all 3 besides the one who you have worked 7 contracts for) who gave you a 5-star rating, might have given you poor private feedback.

It doesn't make sense right now, I know. Once you complete a few more projects and the "Clients who would recommend you" stats become available, you would have a better understanding of the private feedback you received.

Will I know who will give a poor private feedback? How can I solve this?

Hi Catherine Assuncio,

We won't be able to share information about any specific feedback, but you can check the explanation of how the Job Sucess Score is calculated here.

I would recommend that you continue doing great work for current and future contracts so that your score can improve overtime.

Don't work with cheap clients any more and make sure you check potential clients' ratings and feedback before applying for jobs.

Why is my JSS so low? I never recieved less than 5/5 for a feedback.

And out out the 3 jobs in progress 2 are already completed but the client has not ended those since the the products I designed are still beinging manufactured in china and it takes sometime for the assembled printed circuit boards to arrive. And I am very well aware that those clients had been working with me happily.

Only bad thing I noticed that happened to me was, a client closing a project even after I had almost completed my work, saying that he had done a silly mistake and he himself figured out the solution for the code debugging problem he gave me. Before I even could response he had cancelled the job selecting "work no longer needed". Even if could negetively affect my JSS it still was a $15 small job.

So why is my JSS made so low? This is surely a mistake and it isn't fair.

One cancelled job, one $1 job. These are two jobs without a 5/5 feedback.

Not two. They both are the same. He paid me an extra $1 to make it go not as unpaid because he totally agreed that it was his fault to cancel in the first place. (I have heard that jobs with no payment are bad) And most importantly it was a $15 very little job that the client cancelled because he figured out the solution. Are you saying it is fair to reduce 30% of my JSS for that?
