Refund Question

I entered a contract with a client.  I logged several hours.  The client and I determined that the arrangement wouldn't work out, so we ended the contract.  I issued a refund for most of the hours, expecting the refund would be a discount from what was billed to him.  Now, my weekly balance appears as a negative value.  Can you help me understand if I've just paid him, or if this indeed is a negative balance against the billed amount.
