Refund issue

I cancelled the contract and want to refund the money to the client but upwork will take the refunded money from my earnings not from the money in the escrow. Why?

It looks like the contract you're referring to has no Escrow funded so it could not be refunded. You can check this help article for more information on how to give a refund.
