Hi Meghan,
Unfortunately, when the client fails to pay for hours logged by the freelancer, any hours that aren't covered by Upwork Hourly Protection may be reversed.

Hello Meghan,
In most cases it happens when client didn't paid to UpWork and some of hours loged wasn't qualify for payment protection. You can read details here: https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211068288-Hourly-Protection.
