If the client asked for free work, it's against the rules.
If you just send it for free without being asked, you can do that, but why would you, you would never get paid.

For starters, a freelancer needs to be hired on a contract on Upwork, covered by the appropriate Payment Protection program, in order to be able to get paid and benefit from the protection systems we have in place.
