If the client asked for free work, it's against the rules.
If you just send it for free without being asked, you can do that, but why would you, you would never get paid.

I see you've recently joined Upwork and would like to strongly suggest reviewing these resources (here and here) before starting to submit proposals, in order to maximize your chances of getting hired and ensure you're using the platform in the optimal way. For starters, a freelancer needs to be hired on a contract on Upwork, covered by the appropriate Payment Protection program, in order to be able to get paid and benefit from the protection systems we have in place. The resources above do contain a clear description of these processes and reviewing them will help to familiarize yourself with the platform and its features that you can benefit from.
