Shady Jobs: Share the Ones You've Seen

There are a lot of shady and weird jobs on oDesk. 1: Some I've seen are wanting photo editors to remove watermarks. This is clearly illegal, as they don't own the un-watermarked images themselves and are trying to get someone else to do their dirty work, so they can get stock photos or someone else's photos for free. Yet there are always tons of applicants. I suppose slave labour and illegal activities goes hand-in-hand? 2: I just now saw a job where the person wanted someone to edit a cellphone bill. Sounds pretty shady to me. Please feel free to share the odd and shady job postings you've seen.

There are any number of academic works put up[ every day, from college assignments to PhDs, shamelessly asking not for writing but for the writing to be done, full courses to be taken, etc - even logging in at certain times in realtime to take oral exams. There is a fraud button but somehow I don't think oDesk is really all that bothered...

I still remember the one interview that I had where the job turned out to be me taking the client's Master's of Education online program. He wanted me to do all the assignments, log into the class and participate in online discussions and take the tests. I had another interview for a job that was to edit a Master's thesis. The client said that his thesis adviser had already taken a look and left some comments that he wanted me to deal with. When I looked at the paper, the thesis adviser was basically telling the client that the paper had been plagiarized and most of the citations and references were completely made up.

and there was the famous quite recent one where a desparate client posted a job for someone to prepare and edit a defence letter in response to demands from a course committee; in short, he had to explain why all his work was plagiarised, and why it looked like it wasn't even his own work!

And the one from the person studying business who wanted a freelancer to write a paper on business ethics for them. There was also one where a parent was hiring someone to do their child's schoolwork.

If I had the time and didn't mind refunding the money/care about feedback, it would be great to take on these jobs and just write complete nonsense.

I applied for one that was originally posted as an Admin role. The guy responded and admitted that in fact he was here to find girls for his porn site. Another role I applied to was advertised as a Customer Service role, but in fact the lady wanted people to speak in a sexual manner to guys looking for sex.

I had one that was advertised as a  customer service and admin role. When i respsonded to the initial message, I found out quickly it was total scam! The guy requested that we speak via google hangouts instead of via upwrk, and and would go on to ask me for my banking info! I quickly reported him.

Other proposals that have responded were sleazeballs requesting to chat on skype, and then asking me to join them on some 3rd rate dating app or asking if I have a BF.

This topic is a worthy one, but needs to have it's own category too.

Too many threads started about scammy-type jobs already

Oh, I just had a super shady job offer - I had to make a job interview with one girl and recruit her for one EU programme's summer job. Well, the guy who did not even tell me his real name via Skype explained that it is supposed to be a "good prank" as they want to organise for the girl a surprise trip - when she arrives in this other country they would organise for her entertainment, etc.. Haha.. well.. I said, obviously, no..
