Should Upwork not charge VAT in the UK?

This is for freelancers in the UK only (and Upwork agents)

I have recently registered for VAT in the UK. My accountant has told me that Upwork should not have charged me VAT for their service fees (even when we were in the EU), for years, because they are not registered for VAT in the UK.

The Upwork service invoices do not have a UK VAT number.

Has anybody been told this?

Hi Federico,

Upwork charges VAT to freelancers and agencies in certain countries unless specific exemption requirements are met. Upwork is required to collect this tax and pay it to the appropriate government agency. You can find more information in this help article

I am talking specifically about the UK, so I need to see evidence that Upwork pays the UK government the money they collect in VAT from the likes of me or the government will tell me that they have no knowlwdge of Upwork paying them the VAT, therefore I cannot claim it back.
My accountant says I have a dispute with the UK HMRC coming because of this.

Read the information in the link provided, the answers to your questions are listed.

If what I am asking was there, I would not beasking here. I am addressing people in the know about VAT and the UK.
