I'm sending my very first proposal.  Do you sign your name in the cover letter or is this something that should be kept private?

Sign it. The client is able to click through to your profile, so there's no reason not to include your name...

I think it depends on the client and the job offer. I nearly always sign off in a personal "best wishes" way.

Sometimes it seems clear that clients don't want this, particularly if they don't ask for a cover letter. If they just want questions answered, I am usually as brief in my answers as they are in their questions, and I have been awarded a couple of jobs this way.
