The easiest high-paying profession to learn how to do and get academic credentials for is school principle.

But that's not a job you can do on Upwork.

(But it is very difficult to be a GOOD or GREAT school principle.)

For work on Upwork:
You want in-demand skills, and familiarity with specific technologies or software packages, for which clients are hiring, but not TOO MANY freelancers are specialists for.

So what does NOT work is something like WordPress:
Lots of demand. But way to many freelancers.

What also does NOT work is something like:

haiku writing

VERY FEW freelancers specialize in this. But there is no demand on Upwork.

Look at the incoming jobs feed for skills/technologies that clients are hiring for but which are less well known. These are often not generic skills, such as "design" or "illustration" or "web development." These may be SPECIFIC techniques or software packages.

For example, If each day one or two clients posts a job to hire freelancers to work with "Northhaven Form Factory", but they don't get deluged with proposals because very few freelancers are familiar with Northhaven Form Factory... Then THAT would be a good technology to learn.

The truth is, if you intently study "Northhaven Form Factory" or similar technologies or software packages, and practice with it, and create some projects yourself with it, then you can gain expertise within just a few weeks.

It's not different than MOST specific skills.

You can NOT become an expert chef within a few weeks.

But with a few weeks of practice, you COULD become an expert in baking meringue pies.

"Easy" and "a lot of money" are economic opposites.

If something is very easy and produces significant income, you can be certain that people will flock to it.

When the supply of people willing to do the job is greater than the amount of work, the pay rate of that work will go down as people compete with each other by offering to do the work for a lower rate.

When the supply of work is greater than the number of people doing the work, the workers can command a higher rate since those who need work done are competing for the people to do it.

Therefore, either find something obscure with a high demand for workers, or, look at the skill set you have and find a way to differentiate yourself from others in the same line of work.  You can do this by specializing in a specific area, offer additional services for convenience, offering premium services because you're the best, offering value-based pricing to cater to the widest segment of the market, or just be flat out unique.

Keep in mind that none of these are a gauruntee you'll make alot of money.  In order to fill a need in the market, a demand has to exist.

If you do happen to find that niche where the work is easy and the pay is phenomenal, keep that secret to yourself.
