Hi There,I am from UK with Work premit visa status. As far as i know  Non-residents only pay tax on their UK income and they don't pay UK tax on their foreign income. and i am working for UK's Health Organisation in IT department . I do not have any idea regarding TAX information UPWORK is asking. My current employer deduct the tax and NI from my unique NI (national Insurance number). I do not have any legal company registered or VAT. Please help me out here that as a freelancer how do i get paid from work done on Upwork ? Thanks, Parul

Hi Parul,

You will only need to fill out our W-8BEN form and verify your payment method in order to be able to withdraw your earnings from Upwork.
I can advise you to consult with a local specialist on how to report your earnings from Upwork according to the laws in your country. If you have any additional questions let me know. Thank you.

Hi Goran,

I gone through that option says Non U.S. freelancer. My confusion is that form W-8BEN is asking for legal business name which i don't have. Honetsly , i am new to Upwork and i thought its for Freelancer to work here but it is asking for VAT and Legal business name n etc.. It appears to me for any business firm. I am NoN-Residential UK person they do not have to registred for any HMRC (IT is for foriegn income tax return) .  I can provide my UK Bank Detail to verify payment method but i am not sure about this W-8BEN.

Thanks,

Parul

As business name use your own legal name, and just leave the VAT part blank.

You know wrong. Your Upwork earnings will have to be taxed as self employed earnings.

The W8BEN simply declares to Upwork that you are not a US tax payer.

That seems not appropriate for me as i can not be self-employe in UK than.  I should shut down my account than from Upwork as its meaningless for who can't work as self employee in country like UK.

Thanks to letting me know in brief. sorry to say but previous version policy of o-Desk was helpful for freelancer. I used to work on that.

Then why did you not go back to your oDesk account? You should not have opened a new account, just updated your existing one.

Hi Petra,

Unfortunatley its been 4-5 year now that i was using O-desk. Its not working now and meanwhile i do not remeber all my credential n all details.

If i use my legal name in the field of Legal business name and keep VAT blank . Does it work like that ? are you sure that it wont affect when i do withdrawl ?

Thanks,

Parul
