Tax Information > W-9 > Legal Name of Business?

What am I supposed to put as Legal Name of Business when I'm not applying as LLC but as Sole Proprietorship? I want to confirm if it's true that I would just use my own name?

I found this when looking up my question:

"In the US a business is a “sole proprietorship” until it incorporates. That just means that your entire business falls under your name and you use your social security number for tax identification purposes.

Although you don’t need a legal entity, it is important to track your finances for tax purposes. When you work for someone else and receive a W-2, they handle a portion of your taxes. However, with freelancing you must pay your own taxes - which can take 15–30% of your freelance income."

But I want to double check on Upwork. Thanks!

Hi Andy,

All freelancers who are U.S persons should file a Form W-9 with Upwork. Feel free to check out this help article for more information. Regarding your taxes, please consult yourself with a local tax advisor as we can't give tax advice.

Thank you.
