Dark mode typically refers to a color scheme where the background is dark gray and the text and other elements are light, often in shades of light gray or white. The idea behind dark mode is to reduce eye strain, particularly in low-light environments, and to conserve battery life on devices with OLED screens.
While Upwork using black as the background color can technically achieve a dark mode, it's not the most user-friendly implementation. Pure black backgrounds can be harsh on the eyes, especially in dim lighting, and can create high contrast with the text, making it harder to read for some users. Dark gray backgrounds, on the other hand, offer a more balanced and comfortable viewing experience.
In summary, true dark mode typically involves using dark gray backgrounds rather than pure black to provide a better visual experience for users. I hope that Upwork considers this update asap.

I tried it for 2.5 seconds and switched back. Horribly high contrast. AND, why is Upwork spending our fees on this!!!? FIX THE **bleep** DESKTOP APPLICATION! Messages are always getting stuck and NOT updating! STOP WASTING TIME AND MONEY ON UNNECESSARY AND UNNEEDED FLUFF!
FIX YOUR MESSAGING!

Yes complete black background colour can make it difficult to adjust, having a slightly lighter shade of black could certainly make it better.
I'll also add that the current font colours are a bit too sharp for a proper dark theme. The white and green colours are too bright, putting extra strain on the eyes.
The dark theme is not perfect, but I wouldn't say it's a bad implementation or that it is not important. It's just the first implementation and I'm mostly liking it. Hopefully Upwork will make the necessary improvements soon.

Upwork could adopt industry standards for accessibility, including a dark mode.

Can't even use the dark mood. The black is too black and the white text is big. The contrast is not eye-soothing at all like other dark mode websites.

For some reason, I can't reply to the main thread and Nikola's post.
I have been asking, pleading, and demanding for a dark mode for almost a decade, and Upwork did not care. When I pointed out the accessibility standards every major website uses correctly, nothing at all.
So, I created my own dark mode for my settings in Firefox and Brave years ago. The dark modes, unless you write them, don't work on Upwork, because Upwork can't even manage to do that right, because when you use them, it makes the colors go weird, which does not happen on any other major site.
I thought, OK, this is a good thing, I will be supportive. Son of a gun, they fooled me again. I thought I had seen (literally) all of their BS, but no.
This is not an acceptable dark mode by any industry standards. All they need to do, is hire someone who knows what they are doing, but they no doubt think this is great!
I really got fooled, but it ain't gonna happen again.
Dark mode industry standards have been in use for twenty years, and any site should have the simple coding that allows dark modes to work if they don't have their own.
Some fool went, hmmmm me make dark, and so they did.

Every week, I log in to Upwork to see what your designers have broken again. At some point, I assumed I had become numb to the pointlessly painful UI edits. And then came "dark mode"...
Do you all even know why dark mode exists in the first place? This isn't an NFT app. Please, hire someone who knows what they're doing. Or literally just go on Figma, color pick their dark mode colors, switch out their blue primary color with your green, and voila, you might actually be on track to creating a proper dark mode.
Right now, the devil in light mode is more tolerable than the friend in your supposed dark mode. Do better FGS!

There is no room for trial and error in technical services.
Amateurs are eventually more expensive than professionals.

It looks slightly less crappy than the fake dark mode plugin I was forced to use until now. I'll take a win on this platform no matter how small.

I agree 100%, I can't even see the time of the texts properly. The font + its color, both are no good.

Theres to many different colours in the dark mode, for example in my messages (in my client account) theres the following colours all on the screen at once - black, blue, white, red, green, grey plus that animated rocket thing they have added in the status section is pink then the hand that holds it is skin colour. It would be more effective if they used less colours.

I recently had to add a billing method to my account and it looked horrible with dark mode. I have inputted a dummy card number (4242), as can be seen, the text is barely visible as can be seen in the attached screenshots.
The fields for first and last name are much nicer and easier to read.
Please upwork, fix it!

I was looking for this thread! I use dark mode across all apps and website when possible but Upworks is by far the worst. They can take a look at Notion's dark mode and just copy-paste it, it's not that hard. I sincerely hope they fix it because it's being rude to my eyes!
