Their is no logic to the amount of connect per job.

Why does a 10min job with a $5 budget take two connect to apply when a 3month plus job with a $1000 budget also shows 2 connect required to apply?

How does these two job both require 2 connects

Because, er... The thing is... No, wait. Umm, to improve the... It's on the tip of my tongue.

Oh, yes, I remember now. Because nobody thought this through at all, and it's a stupid idea that (even if it's fixed in the long term) is so broken now it will push all the decent contractors elsewhere, having almost the exact opposite effect to that which was intended. Plus it means oDesk can taken even more than the 10% we already pay them...

It would be more logical for them to give us 30/35 connects instead of 60/70 and have 1 connect to apply for jobs.

I know eventually they will stick it to the clients too, and allow them to feature their job, that will in turn stick it harder to the freelancer, because it costs more connects to apply to featured jobs. IIRC Elance also on top of this allows you to spend even more connects on top to feature your application to a job...it gets pretty serious in terms of sucking the pockets dry.

However, as it stands right now, it really does make absolutely no logical sense for it to cost 2 connects to apply to a job. If they wanted us to only send 30/35 applications per month that is how many connects they should have given us, then just make it cost $2 per connect instead of $1 per connect and having to buy 2...

Hi Matthew,

We realize you may not support the change and that's fine. However, please be mindful of our Community Guidelines when posting to the Community. We'd rather not edit/remove any posts if we don't have to.

Garnor, I don't support too. || And the job percentage showing on my profile is killing me. When there is clients feedback system, we don't need job percentage.  Well, I want to contribute to the algorithm of making the percentage score. Once, I didn't work on elance and freelancer for this uncomfortable things. Now, they are on oDesk. How can I contribute? Its okay, if you don't want to listen to me. I just don't know what to do. I have 4.86 feedback from 66 job, 692 hours and 57% job success. How come 57%? Getting no job.

Hi Devin,

Right now, the logic is pretty simple as most jobs require 2 Connects. In the future though, this may change with jobs requiring 1 to 5 Connects.

Garnor, how is that logic? Every job requiring two connects a) means we now have only 30 applications a month, and b) seems to defeat the purpose of Connects. Presumably all jobs require 2 at the moment because the infrastructure isn't in place to assign a suitable connect value to postings, in which case rolling them out seems premature.

 Garnor,

Why is it that we are now getting charged twice?

1) When we bill for hours worked (Odesk cut)

2) Connects, obviously not many freelancers can bid on projects with only 60/connects per month and a project costing so far 2/connects a bid. I know its only $10, but still thats a negative effect to freelancers. I sure hope there is good news on the way from Odesk because so far with the "unsuccessful" success score and the connects, they didn't really hit the bulls eye on those.

Cody

Looks like its time to move on from Odesk.

Garnor,

You say most jobs require 2 connects. Can you show me just one job in any catagorey or type that requires anything but 2 connects. Just one and I will believe, because at this point most is not the truth as far as I can see ALL job require 2 and not one is 1,3,4, or 5 connects.

I have visited a $25 job from my catagory the client with 5 star rating and spend $$$$$$$.

What I have noticed there were just 7 applicant  and most of them were new.before connects a job like this have more than 60 to 70 applicants new and professionals as well so should i say that freelancers are saving their connects for good high budget future jobs because if they finish their free connects they should have to buy for new jobs that might be posted at the end of the month

So in this situation may the client will suffer not to have a good freelancers who dont apply on his post because freelancers may saving their connets.

Same for the freelancers which are spending their connects in one week and dont want to go for premium plan again in this situation client will have less applicants and may not find the contracter he is looking for,

Hope someone  can shed some light on it.

Hi Iftikhar,

We do expect that freelancers will apply less and be more selective about the jobs they apply to. However, weโ€™ve heard from clients that they can be overwhelmed with the volume of low quality applications that can appear on their job posts. Theyโ€™re more likely to hire if they see fewer, high quality applicants.

Hey Valeria,

I absolutely agree, in my field. However some other freelancers here have made some very solid points.

In web development field and a few others, every job is different, it is easy to be selective about which jobs you apply to. You check the job description make sure it looks like something that fits your skills, you have time to do, and is at least detailed enough that you can work out the scope of the project and address their concerns/give a plan of action to help them.

However, what about people who for example do voiceovers? Most of those jobs are going to be "I need a voiceover for a video". It is important for these people to be able to apply to every job they can to get their voice out there.

In conclusion after hearing these other freelancers in different fields, I feel the system is unfair. It is a great advantage to people like me, who are in a field where being selective is good, but other fields it is a major disadvantage.

I appreciate your resposne.  But I couldn't find the logical reason of costing 2 connects for 1 job post with the plan of 60 connects/month. From 80 applications/month (20/week quota) to 30 application/month isn't making sense.

Hi Ab,

Weโ€™ve carefully examined the application data when we settled on this monthly allotment of Connects. On average, it takes freelancers (even new ones) much fewer than 30 applications to win a job. We also expect that freelancers will find they will need to submit fewer applications to win a job in the future, which means more jobs with less wasted effort.

What if you rely upon lots of fixed-priced jobs? Even if I got every job I applied for (unlikely), it still doesn't give me enough to live on now. Am I expected to gamble what money I do make on applications I may not get/will never exist?

Hi Ramon,

Over 90% of successful oDesk freelancers and qualified new freelancers submit fewer than 30 applications per month today, and we anticipate that freelancers will see more application success in the future because there will be fewer applications overall. Highly active freelancers have the option to subscribe to a paid Freelancer Plus membership plan, which gives them a higher Connects allotment, the ability to purchase and roll over Connects.

Exactly, to get the same amount of jobs as before, you want me to gamble $2 each time. The amount was deliberately chosen not to be enough for any but the most successful, anf an extra 10 credits for the 'premium' (standard) membership makes no difference either way.

Most writing jobs are fixed price and less than a day's work: getting at least one, but preferably two a day is how many people manage to make a living. None of the wealthy computer programmers odesk so loves are going to need to purchase extra credts, this is just a tax on the low-to middle level users who work in writing, translation, voiceover work, and all the other things that don't generally command $40+ an hour..

This is definately an oddball situation. The pros and cons are there as mentioned. I'd have to agree with Charles. It's only working well for some currently.

In my case, I was being very selective in the jobs I applied to. I tried to be anyway!! As a result, I had plenty of chances left in the previous job quota setup. Honestly, I never used them all in any given week. Never even came close. There's the problem, not everybody can do that. Seems like new comers didn't really get helped out there.

The other part is what Iftikhar said. Clients might turn around and just post jobs at the end of the month only. Just to see if freelancers were waiting. There's also always the chance that  one job post with a "nice" pay to it might get flooded. That didn't really help clients.

Maybe if it changed to the "1 to 5 connects" as mentioned based on the pay, that might help. Maybe? Not really sure on that one!! hehehehe

I agree with what the others freelancers said. Especially with Charles, concerning the problems deriving from job offers that are very poor in information. If you want freelancers to be selective, you should also improve the quality of the job offers so that it is quick for us to browse them and know what are worth our application and our time. Maybe a minimum characters amount in the client's job offer.

I also would have prefered a management of the number of applications based on our ranking and experience and not equal for any freelancer, new or with a long experience. Especially since oDesk already takes a high percantage on each work, and it would seem fair to me that those who already contribute to the website's welfare with many jobs and worked hours don't have to pay the membership in order to have as many connects as a random new paying user.

I just want to add I think you should think of a way to also include some meritocracy in the connects system in order to offer a better service and at the same time avoiding losing some of your freelancers.

I have received the "top rated" badge with 100% Job Success. You already earn from my successful work each time a client pays me. Why should I want to subscribe to the membership just because if I don't want to I'd have disadvantage compared to any random user? I think it would be fair to reward my professional work, and also smart from you, since we all know there are alternatives to oDesk that don't take any percentage on the work. I don't see this paying membership + amount of connects not related to job history and ranking + percentage on each payment as three things that can work well together without a large number of freelancers leaving this website.

I am telling all this because I don't want to leave. I have always liked working on this website and I am thankful for the job I found here. I don't mean to complain, but to bring our perspective to your attention.

 Elena,

If you are a top freelancer, you have a benefit when applying. Your application is at the top of the applicants.

Hi Elena,

Thanks for the feedback. oDesk is committed to improving the quality of the experience for both freelancers and clients. This is one of the many steps we are taking toward this goal. In the coming months, we will also be launching initiatives to improve the quality of client behaviors.

Regarding your second point, we actually do offer additional benefits to Top Rated users like yourself. You can read more about this program in our blog post here. We've also summarized details of this program in our Help Article here

                              Subject: 1 Application per Day

Hi Clients & oDesk,

After knowing that it will take 2 connects to apply for 1 job post. Feeling confused.....! Should I apply for it or not with limited connects but with "Good fit skill set"?

Thanks to bunch of questions under job post. It did help to make decision quickly. Closed the tab and looked for some new gig...

You guys should say thanks to freelancer that he/she is daring to apply for your job post with limited diamonds. And you'r gonna ask list of questions too! No way.....!

Finally, time arrived to open some business outside of oDesk!

This connects thing has turned my rate from 1300$ earning on march to 0 earning till now on April, and I have left only 20 connects. ๐Ÿ˜ž
I'm pretty sure oDesk will change to the previous system very soon. They will suffer earnings as well. I'm 100% sure.

Same as here nothing earned from last couple of weeks stil have 60 connects avaialble did not find a good job to spend my precious connects. Most of the jobs are from unverified clients since the connects are introduced.

Mean if i did not earn Odesk will not earn.
