I created an account a while ago but didn't use it much.

Now I want to be a full time freelancer but I forgot passwords (corresponding email and login) assosiated with this account, so couldn't log in and decided to create new email and upwork account.
Then I accidentally found password to my old Upwork profile and was able to log in.

I immediately closed my new account and wanted to switch to old one by changing an email, but system wont let me do this, it says 'This email is already in use'.

Set forwarding on the new email to send to the old. In other words, just forward email from the one you don't want to use to the one you do.
