To all freelancers looking for help

I have always had freelancers come to me for help. In the last year, the river has swelled into an enormous ocean.

You don't need me; Upwork provides an enormous amount of information that few ever use. If, after you have gone through all the information I provide, you still have questions, that is when you ask additional questions in the forum.

If you think you will make big bucks right away, you are mistaken. The majority of freelancers never land a job because they have no skills and aren't interested in educating themselves. Others believe online freelancing is a path to full-time employment. It can be, but highly unlikely on this platform.

Freelancing is not for everyone. It means you are self-employed and must adhere to all regulations and laws governing responsibilities, such as paying taxes. Freelancing means you are on your own. No one has your back, including Upwork. If you don't follow the rules, no one will or can help you.

If you are willing to work hard, follow the rules and prepared to spend a lot of connects and proposals, you can be successful, as many are on Upwork. While so many fail, it is almost always due to lack of skills and treating freelancing like employment  where the employer will make sure you do the job correctly.

If you want to succeed, start with the Terms of Service, then read this from Wes.

Then go here. Then here.  Next, check this site regularly for events such as webinars and other learning opportunities.

After that, go here for safety information, and then here. If you still need help, after you have gone through all the previous steps, you can find additional help here. This thread is dedicated to new freelancers. And here are announcements from Upwork that can help keep you up to date.

It will take some time to go through all the information. I'm not suggesting people should not post in the forum, I am suggesting before you ask questions and want help, you need to help yourself first.

From Prashant P: "And have relevant profile picture of your face.  Not some desks, or Mickey mouse, or full face covering."

From Susan S: "And patience! Have patience! It takes a while to get started, even after going through all the information available."

From Martina P:  "Only one thing you forgot, namely telling people to use all 15 skills, if you have all 15 skills"

And with advice from Maria T, I will say,

Refrain from personal messages, please read all the links I have added.

You need to go back to the top and read everything and follow every link. Your profile is private, but I know what's there - and I'm sure you need to use the Academy (link included in the post).

I'm not sure what you mean about the ID.

It takes marketable skills, money to run the business (yes, those connects, too), time, patience, motivation, and again, marketable skills. If you haven't had a job in a year, you need to take a serious look at your business. It makes no sense to continue on your path if you are losing money.

Success is relevant - it means different things to different people. However, if your business is losing money for a year, you must make changes, or you will continue to lose money and time and effort.

Kamran,

Please go to your Setting and update your Profile to Public.

You need to work on your profile. It is far too long, and clients aren't going to read through it.

The first line is all clients see in a search, so you have to find a way to grab their attention. In the introduction, you need to tell the client why you can do more or better than any other freelancer. You have excellent stats, and with some work on your profile, it can be brilliant.

Everything with Upwork has changed, including proposals and responses. With all the scammer freelancers and clients on the platform, it has changed all aspects of freelancing here. When the doors were opened to anyone, all category limits were removed, and all skills tests were disposed of, many legitimate clients left. With 20? (Upwork won't say) million freelancers competing for 500,000? jobs, the ratio is not good, especially since those jobs contain scams.

While no one knows the exact numbers, the flood of wannabe freelancers has changed the platform. Legitimate invitations are in definite decline for many.

Every freelancer has to decide how they want to conduct business. Your proposals should be complete. For a very simple job, that might mean 75 words. However, it might take 500, or 1000, or more, depending on the job. Advice is great, but you already have success here, so you have an understanding of your business new people do not.

I think your situation is likely due to the platform's issues. Everyone should have alternatives for times when the ROI is poor.

Thank you so much for your help! I will start working on it .

Sensibly true that you are on your own. And nowadays, getting projects in Upwork has been way more complicated. **Edited for Community Guidelines** hard.

Lucio,

Yes in many job categories it is more difficult due to greater freelancer competition and generative AI.

It's important for all freelancers to upskill to expert in-demand skills that clients find difficult to locate anywhere else.

In many categories, it is more difficult to find jobs because there aren't many on the platform. It's not AI, it's often the lack of decent, well-paying jobs. AI has nothing to do with cheap, crap jobs.

It's important for freelancers to have real, legitimate, marketable skills.

Hey Esha,

Please click the Academy link on the top of this page to learn how to best use this site to update your Profile, cover letter, and finally obtain jobs.

Or they could use ALL of Upwork's resources and the excellent advice from Wes on scams that you never, ever include. Too bad, the threads where people want reviews, where the thread is about reviews, go lacking any response. There are a couple of dedicated freelancers who supply extensive advice, not just copy and paste one sentence. It's odd you want to turn this helpful, useful post on how to use the platform into your thread of copy and paste.

Have you bothered reading Jeanne's initial post? The one on top of the page?

Guess you haven't.

You need to go back to the top post I wrote, and read it and follow every link. Because you are new, you are at risk of being scammed. The scammers can tell, just like I can, that you haven't read or aren't following the rules. You can start with a photo of your face. Do not use all caps when writing in your profile, or any time you are dealing with clients - or anyone. It looks like you are screaming.

Your profile has to grab the client in the first line, because that's all they see in a search.

Freelancing takes marketable skills, money to run the business, including connects, time, patience, and motivation. If you have those, you can be successful. It takes newcomers a while to get started here, and will likely take a lot of proposals before you are hired.

You say you are a translator in English, yet your profile is full of basic mistakes. Something is not right here.

Then, it gets worse, when you say "ELSE I CAN ALSO WORK AS A TRANSLATOR ,BY TRANSLATING PARAGRAPHS OR PAGES OF ANY LANGUADGE,IN FOUR WEEKS."

What amazing skills - not only two languages, but ANY language. I'm sorry, I call deception. By the way, if you possessed such skills, you wouldn't be scrounging for jobs on Upwork. You are not telling the truth, and it's obvious. The only way you can translate any language is through the use of programs. That makes you able to use a program, not a translator. No matter why the client looks at your profile, the obvious deception is going to be a giant beacon saying this person is being deceptive on the translator aspect, maybe the whole thing is a scam.

Raja,

Please use two Skills in the Title and write four concise paragraphs for the Summary minus the emoticons. Focus on the first sentence of the Summary because it appears in the client search.

I have spoken with you before, and the changes have not happened. It still appears that you are using the picture you drew. While it's fine for a portfolio for an artist, or to hang in your house, it is not a professional photo, and the color needs to go or change to a neutral color.

The emojis/graphics should be changed into text and broken up into paragraphs.

You did change the top line, so that's great. I'd still consider using direct skills for your title.

It was really good to read but I think it all depends upon your level of patience.

Danish,

Great to see you on the site!

Yes it takes time and patience to do well on Upwork.

Do you have any questions that the Community can answer?

The freelancer made a comment. A comment is not a question.

Hi,

I submitted a proposal for a short animation job(fixed price). The client accepted my proposal and asked for a preview containing my watermark. I completed the Animation and sent the preview. The client didn't respond for few days and I asked him to respond... well he cancelled the job as you can the screenshot. I don't know what to do! Please guide or help me!

**Edited for Community Guidelines**

So, you had an Upwork contract?

When you say you sent the completed preview, do you mean the entire job?

Was this fixed price or hourly?

We need more information about the job to help you. However, Upwork is the only one that can change anything, but someone may be able to explain it.

Please be aware that watermarks are useless. They can be removed very easily. Also, you can't post anything that identifies the client or job.

Hi,

Yes, I had an contact, fixed price and the preview I sent to the client was almost done as I was waiting for the client to make any revisions.

I don't know how you find the time to post so many of your comments - or the will to constantly have to deal with unrealistic people.

I'm a multitasker, or maybe just scatterbrained, but I often use a voice reader and a voice-to-text while I'm looking through jobs, looking up Upwork rules, reading emails, etc. It's a great time saver.

The will, is even more difficult. The only reason I tolerate it, is because I have met some amazing people along the way, who took a bit of help and ran with it. There are people here who started with nothing, and have careers that will sustain them for a lifetime, if not here, then elsewhere. Despite the fact that the vast majority do nothing, some are willing to be responsible for themselves. And some of them are pretty cool people.

I have opened an account with other mail.I made a mistake and it was client account.I did not know what to do and locked account. After that I opened this account and even use money for being premium. And 3 hours ago I had an message saying that my account locked permanently.I need real operator to solve this.Where I can find help?

You will have to deal with Upwork. Hopefully, if you explain it was unintentional, they will reinstate your account. You can (hopefully) respond to the message or start a ticket through Support.

I wrote a message to the support team explaining the situation. Afterwards, my account status changed from suspicious to a new status requiring identity verification. I thought it would be resolved when I confirmed this. I sent my passport and photo as requested. And when I looked at the latest status, it seemed approved. But on my account, it said suspicious and suspended again. 1 day before the account was suspended,my connects, which I could not use because I was a freelancer plus member, remain and this makes me very sad. How can I connect to a live operator?upwork.png

You can click on the three dots in the upper right corner of your message. A menu will open and "notify moderator" is at the bottom.  Another window will open and you can leave a message. However, since you have a ticket, they will likely refer you back to it. Is there any way to respond directly to the ticket?

Upwork usually makes a decision and that's it. However, because of the inconsistencies, they need to speak with you directly. Getting a real person on the phone is highly unlikely. It could be a glitch, and one part of the program wasn't updated, or something similar. It can take a very long time to get someone to respond.

Hi Lala,

I'm sorry for not being able to get back to you sooner. However, I see that you've been coordinating with our support team and several support tickets were raised about your case. Please allow our team 24-48 hours and you will get an update on one of your tickets here once your case is thoroughly reviewed.

Dear Lala:

If you are real account holder(ID varification, Driving license etc.), then you can restore your account again through the support and generating a support ticket. Hopefully your issue can be resolved.

Regards.

Hi, I hope this message you finds you all well and good.

I am soliciting on behalf of my younger brother (Ajao Joseph Olawale)
His account was suspended October 6, 2023.

He was asked to re-verify his identity and location which he did and it was verified (he received an Email saying theyโ€™ve verified his location & identity and I that if his account was suspended, that it has being lifted) but itโ€™s being weeks now and the suspension has not being lifted on his account.
The lift has not still reflected on his account.

Please kindly look into this issue. Iโ€™ve sent mail to support but there havenโ€™t being any response.
This is why I am posting this on his behalf since he canโ€™t post either using his account because of the suspension.

Please help look into this.
He has clients and on-going projects that he needs to complete.
Let me know what details you need for my brotherโ€™s account to proceed.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Ajao Elijah Ifeoluwa
