Trouble with Google Doc link - is Upwork blocking access?

I  want to send a Google Doc link in a message to a client. But when I open it to see if it's working after I've sent it, it says access is denied. I have changed the share setting to "anyone with this link". When I paste the URL in the address box, it works. Why doesn't it work when I try to send it in an Upwork message? I'd really appreciate some help or advice with this, as I need to get the work to the client.
