US State Taxes - non resident of CA or just stay with state of residence?

Last year, I didn't make much money on UpWork and I just declared income on my state return.

But this year, income will be more significant. I read some blog article about freelancers and needing to file returns in different states.

Since my UpWork income comes from California, do I need to file as CA non resident? Or do I just file/pay to my state of residence (HI) ?

Anyone have any good references on this topic?

Thanks

I use Turbox Tax for Self-Employed.  I only file state return in the state I live in and Turbo Tax is fine with that.

Thanks!

I am not a tax accountant.

You pay state tax in the state you reside in and do the work from. If you had a physical presence in CA that would be another matter. If you are living and working from Wisconsin, as an example, you would pay state tax to WI only. Incidentally, while UW is in CA, they are not the one's paying you anyway.
