UW Connects!!! Do you feel cheated???

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that when one withdraws a submitted proposal, that in considerations for ones withdrawal of proposal, Upwork should credit/add back the connect to ones account???

Nope ... still have lots left.

But you'd have more left if withdrawn proposals refunded those connects no?   🙂

You got the connects for free.

You were not "cheated."

Please explain.   Maybe I'm just a confused newbie!   How did I receive free connects???

Do you pay for the 60 connects you receive?  No.  Hence they are free.

So every month when I pay for my "PLUS MEMBERSHIP" and also when I actually purchase additional connects (which I have done 2 times in the last month),  I'm really not purchasing connects???  If that is correct, then what am I purchasing???

I guess I'm more confused that I previously realized.  Thanks guys for your input.

I receive 60 connects per month. Entirely for free.

I have never paid any money for connects,

How do you get your connects?

If you're paying for them, I suggest you stop doing so and instead use them more carefully.

Personally, I use on average only one connect per month. I would be glad to give you my extras. I don't need them. But Upwork does not allow that.

Nice to see you are advocating people don't buy connects on this site.

I agree. Just use up what you have and then go to another site and use up the free ones there.

Or, use them wisely and don't run out.

My connects are going to re-set in the next couple of days and, because I've had an unusually active bidding month after wrapping a few big projects in the past few weeks, I have only 26 left. Last month, I had 54 remaining when they re-set.

Michael, YOU have been paying for connects.

I do not pay for connects.

My advice to you is to stop paying for connects so that you can get more jobs like me.

Spend more time applying to fewer jobs.

If you run out of connects, then it's time to work on your skills, portfolio and profile until the end of the month.

No, I don't feel cheated. They are free. If you feel that you blow threw them each month, pay the $10 for rollover. I start off with 200 connects each month and on slower months I might eat up 20 or 30 connects. I'm at 180 now and I think they refresh again today.

I could see new people eating up connects, but once you get regular clients you'll hardly ever bid.

Tighten up your criteria for searches (minimum budget for example) and focus on postings that you have Upwork experience with. IE. If you don't have mobile app development experience but are great with Wordpress apply for Wordpress gigs. Don't waste connects on jobs you want to try on. If the clients looks at your profile and/or portfolio they will wonder why you wasted your time.

On the flip side, accept any invitation to discuss a project (unless it's with a past client you'd prefer not to work with again or something you can't/won't do). Most of my work via Upwork is repeat clients or from invites.

I don't pay for Connects and make them last all month.

Best of luck!

^^^^
I still have 280 connects, I haven't used any in months. This is accomplished by constantly improving my offerings to increase their value, focusing on winning larger contracts, only applying to jobs which I feel I am undoubtedly a great fit for, and replying to invites during the weeks in which the algorithm gods favor me. It is definitely an acquired skill to learn how best to spend your connects, and quantity over quality is the motto. Almost every time I use any connects, I receive a reply from the potential client and this grants me new connects anyway and replaces those I used, because I am intuitive at choosing projects that are best suited to my talents and I know I will be one of the best applicants. This is the easiest way to make the most of your connects and stop paying for them.

That being said, people have been complaining about this since the dawn of time (or at least since Upwork made connects not free) so I'm not sure why people bother still.

Wow.. But this upwork ppl are asking ATLEAST 2 connects per project. 😞

The question is why do you withdraw proposals? If you do this because the client hasn't contacted you after a while, then I see your logic. In this specific case, you may think that since your proposal was not chosen, better getting your connects back and use them for another proposal.

If Upwork would allow this the whole platform's quality would go down very fast. There are already a lot of people who have no skills and nothing to offer, bugging the clients with their sh***y proposals. In some categories, the number of applicants to a single job is so huge that clients have a hard time separating the wheat from the chaff.

And those zombie bidders have only 60 connects. Imagine if they could take their connects back and thus virtually get an unlimited number of connects...

On top of what the others said, specially Rene, it also teaches you to properly vet each job post and client. The most I've used in the last 3 months are around 6 bids, I went one month with just 2 bids. It's not because I have plenty of off-platform* and long-term clients but because I get around 1 invite every two days.**

And yes, Preston's right when it comes to how the site needs you to not be dependent on connects since established Upwork f'lancers shouldn't really have any use for them.

*I got them from craigslist so no, I didn't take any clients off Upwork

Hello

new upwork proposals policy is suck, its not rollover after 12 hours like odesk. With previous policy you were get new proposals if you withdraw application or client decline our application. but now proposals cycle rollover after 1 month. i choose 10$ proposals quota. but i don't see any benefits in this policy. my proposals quota not rollover. now i want to apply new jobs. but my proposals quota is over.

Upwork earn money because we contractors work on Upwork. this is not only contractor's loss. Upwork also face financial loss. lots of my friend leave upwork for this **bleep** policy. this is begining of upwork's end. (like orkut site)

i want clear answer to upwork's top administration. they change this policy or not?

Thanks

I'm not a Upwork top admin but I can tell you this has been asked over and over and no, they don't plan on changing it. I am glad they are keeping it this way.   When it was oDesk people could withdraw their proposal and get the connects back and all it done was caused chaos with people applying to everything they can.  60 connects is more than enough.

Hi Karan,

Connects were implemented last year and the decision was made to not return connects when the proposal is withdrawn. It encourages freelancers to bid more smartly and submit better quality proposals. So far we've seen only positive outcomes of this change, so there are no plans to revert it.

Having read the responses to the OPs question may I extend the Connects conversation with a focus on the following statement: “It encourages freelancers to bid more smartly and submit better quality proposals.”

Having asked the community what the definition of “Hires” is under the heading of “Activity for this job”, if the definition provided is correct, i.e. the job was offered or a proposal accepted, why would the job still be listed under “Find Work”?

It just means that for whatever reason the job has not been closed or expired. The client may still be looking for freelancers, or they may have forgotten about it, or they plan to use the posting again. If the posting has no activity for 30 days, it expires. I've been hired before after the original freelancer doesn't work out, so if the posting looks like a great opportunity, you might still apply even if it shows someone's been hired.

Upwork's vernacular is unique and its rules and process Byzantine. IMO, you may only come close to understanding by scrolling through the forum posts and learning from others' stories. But, when you do, be sure to check the date. The policies change regularly and what once was may no longer be. For example, we used to be able to speak with clients off-platform before entering into a contract. That action is now a bannable offense.

When in doubt, assume that the platform is designed to maximize client convenience and minimize client friction to boost client acquisition. In the situation you reference, a client is asked if they wish to close a job posting once they make a hire, but they are not required to close the listing. Sometimes, clients hire more than one person for the job. (But as you may have guessed, often they just choose not to close the listing for reasons unknown.)

And, yes, I recognize the dissonance between client convenience and forcing all conversations to stay on Upwork. The only thing that trumps client convenience is Upwork fee protection. 🙂

I've noticed that now with this new Upwork platform, unlike the old Odesk, where when you ran out of bids, all you have to do is widraw applications that are dormant and not answered by clients, and after 12 hours, new bids are available to you based on how many bids you have widrawn, and each bid is considered 1 point bid.

But now with this new platform of Upwork, when you ran out of bids you are now obliged to buy a bid for a certain fee, and the saddest part of it is each bid is valued at 2 connects.  So before, I have already garnered 60 bids due to my good standing from the clients star scores, but what Upwork did was to convert my 60 bids and made it 20 connects per bid.  So if I get my original 60 bids, it will now be converted into 30 bids only.  That's kinda sad, as I have worked hard for that 60 bids.  Can you please Upwork admin revived the old scheme that when you widraw a bid, it will be back after 12 hours?  Thank you.
