I am trying to enter my VAT number (I work in The Netherlands) but the system won't accept it. I am sure I am doing it all right - the format, country, name are alright. Do you have any idea how I can cope with this?

Please verify the validity of a VAT number by entering it in the VIES database. Let me know if it verifies in the database but not on Upwork. Thank you.

I just checked - according to the VIES VAT validation this number is valid. It also shows the correct company name and address.

I am also having the exact same problem. I checked on VIES and my VAT is correct with the company name. However, Upwork somehow cannot recognize it. Can you please ask one of your colleagues to contact me in this regard.
