After starting work on a very long project, my client and I determined it'd be the right move to involve someone else, pay me half for half the work and pay the other person half for the other bit of work. It was already contracted as a fixed-rate amount for one milestone, but I need to edit that to decrease the final price and finalize the work. Do I need to create a new contract and cancel this one? I don't want it to affect my place on upwork or anything..

No, no need for anything complicated like that! All you need to do is to request half the money (submit for payment and edit the amount requested) and then the client can approve the request and end the contract. That will get you paid half the money. You then get a message asking you to approve the return of the remaining half of the escrow funds. Approve, and the client gets the remaining half of the money back to hire the other person with.

Thanks, that was helpful. We managed the first step, but she hasn't ended the contract yet so I don't think I'm going to get paid until she does, right? It says this if I try to end the contract myself: "Are you sure you want to end this contract? You have not received payment and the $475.00 in escrow will be returned to your client. If you're waiting for payment for work done, talk to the client before closing this contract."
