Upwork just cancelled a contract due to inactivity. Basically, the client and I agreed to a fixed contract, but then I never heard from the client again, despite me following up. No work was done on the project at all. I need to issue a refund but I am concerned this will negatively impact my freelancer score. It would seem completely unfair to penalize me for a client's inaction.

Provided the client doesn't leave poor feedback, the contract won't affect your score at all.
In future, don't accept contracts until you have what you need to get cracking on the funded milestone and complete it.
