Upwork domination

Upwork seem to be  dominated by highly rated freelancers who have been here for quite some time. It is so hard for new freelancers here to survive despite the skills.

I joined recently and am really struggling as winning a contract here is very arduous. I have bought connects, boosted and submitted several proposals but unsuccessiful.

I feel we need to appreciate the new and upcoming talents, skills, knowldge and experiences.

I wonder how new freelancers can survive here. Please share your experience.

It's not only new freelancers who are struggling; many people - experienced or not - are having trouble finding clients. It's intensely competitive, and some will not survive.

Competition is tough. However it is just like starting any business, everyone need to secure its place to win projects. Consider a new business launch the new product and there are multiple established player in that area. Just think over on how new busines will win clients from establish business. If you ask me than following are common practices -

1. Displaying skills at par with competitors

2. Reflect reliability. For new player it is critical as customer want surety that job will not be left in between

3. Reflect Quality and durability

4. Most important - Cost benefit

There can be many differetiator but I believe these will be key.

It took a few months for me to get the first project in Upwork and, as a fresh member, I was targeted by a few shady charachters whose agenda was just to take advantage of me (which I declined). It requires patience, persistance, discernment and care in designing your profile as well as your proposals. Do not rush into any contract before carefully understanding who your client is, the project, its objectives and the scope of the work. Also beware of academic fraud. Good luck 😉

I had a look at your profile and came to believe that you can build a successful niche and become a key point of reference for your market (Kenya). Set your boundaries and keep going 😉
