Upwork fee deduction

I did an hourly contract for a client. The total payment was $54. Upwork charged $10.41 as its commission. I'm a little confused. I thought Upwork charged 10% of our payment. Shouldn't I be paying $5.40 as fee? Why am I paying more? What am I missing here? I'm new to this so correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, that's correct, but it's only a one-time fee.

Hi Priyanka, was this a direct offer? If so, you might be missing the Instant Connection Fee, which is $4.99 USD.

Yes, it was a direct offer. So, basically more money will be deducted from my payment if the client approaches me directly instead of advertising for it on Upwork? That's weird.
