Upwork technical oddities

I'll use this topic to post actual oddities I find on website. I hope you'll fix these or explain.

First, how can one be in US, city Dubai? See attached.

Second, from time to time I can't download some files. Support is not of help because by the time I get response and solution either client already responded, he hired someone, or became irrelevant in other way.

"It is not safe to download this file. If you really want to access this file please contact Customer Support."

Please, stop preventing us from downloading files. Everyone should have a protection on their computer. And be aware of not downloading files with weird extensions.

Third, mobile app is a mess. Navigating for messages in mobile app is a living hell. Are you aware of that?

Rate tips are completely useless. It jumps from $55 to $35 and back. Without me being aware of criteria. I can't have for various clients different price. It's silly. You don't sell chocolate in store to people at different price according to their appereance. "Oh, this one has a nice haircut, I'll price him just $5. This one is ugly, he'll pay $15."

Thanks for your feedback, Vesna.

- The client may have edited their location information but is either in process of verifying their country or haven't requested to change it. We are testing various ways to use auto-fill for addresses, however, aren't yet ready to introduce it platform-wide.

- Currently potentially dangerous files are blocked for security reasons. Some file formats would also be blocked if they can't be scanned for various reasons. Our engineers are working to make this process more clear for both the client who uploads the file and the freelancer who tries to download it.

- Mobile App doesn't have some of the features available on the full browser version and there are a couple of issues the team is aware of. Could you please share any particular issues with navigating Messages that you are referring to?

- Thanks for sharing your feedback about the Rate Tip feature. I'll forward it to the team.

New ones

#1 I can't accept nor decline invite (job closed before I saw invite), for past nine days. It counts in my stats as invite to which I didn't reply.

#2 I can't copy messages while scrolling down with my mice.

#3 On Mac almost each time I turn it on (every few weeks), Upwork team app is gone from taskbar (although I stick it to it) and I have to reinstall it again.

#4 Notification for discount on a contract with someone from 20% to 10% reappers for several times.

"Could you please share any particular issues with navigating Messages that you are referring to?

I'll post screenshots next time. Clicking each time "continue on web", instead of "upwork android" is annoying.

Recruiters not reading profile carefully and sending irrelevant job invites. Just because I do presentations (format, layout, design) doesn't mean I'm a presenter (person who does the talking in front of attendees).

Hi Vesna,

I'm sorry about the mismatched invite, could you please pm me the invite details so we can reach out to the team and the agent in question?

Upwork

Hi Vladimir, I sent it.

Today:

#1 Clicking on proposal from mobile site within messages doesn't lead to specific proposal details but instead to all proposals list.

#2 What skills do I rate when I give rating to my client? Skills for assembling materials? Skills in his work field? I'm totally baffled.

#3 I can't cut and delete parts od text in mobile site. I can do this on other internet places.

Thanks, Vesna. I'm checking with our mobile developers if those issues are known. As for the feedback category for skills, we have shared this question with the team and while there are no immediate plans to change it, it will be reviewed.

Thank you.

I'll keep update this topic with small glitches/oddities when I notice, if that's ok with you and your team.

That's alright. We appreciate it, Vesna.

One little question, when you use Upwork on mobile, which OS and browser do you use?

It's Fire OS 5, Silk browser.

I chatted with support today. We finished and I received email that asks for feedback. I've noticed inside chat transcription on left upper corner my little square picture was not the one I have for Upwork but the one I have for Facebook, and I don't remember I gave consent for using my Facebook account details when I go through any of Upwork web places. It's so odd.

Hi Vesna,

Is it possible you used that photo on your profile before you uploaded the current one? I would presume this was the initial photo you used on your profile, which was saved in Zendesk and continued being displayed even after you updated your Upwork account.

I'll check with the team to confirm.

Photo I have here, in community and in Upwork, is a photo I have since I've begun working on Upwork. I didn't change it. Plus, I look very unrepresentative on my Facebook photo.

Same as with Upwork, on Gmail I have one photography that doesn't change.

I agree with OP, the Upwork app needs some refining.

Messaging via the mobile app is slow to respond/alert me, but sometimes I will recieve a notification right away. Almost always I will get a notitfication ping to my phone's app right away when I am either on the UpWork Website or on the desktop app already. However if I am not logged into UpWork through any other means, my phone app will take up to an hour to alert me of a new message or invite. And waiting for an email to alert me of a message takes several hours.

There is no way to set availability in the app,

There is no way to accept of decline invitations in the app. If you click accept or decline you are redirected to the mobile version of the website, which isn't very responsive on a mobile device.

The invitations I do get are often incomplete synopses of the jobs, when I look at the job on the website, there is almost always a "more" button to see the rest of the posting. The mobile app rarely has all of the information I need to see if I am interested in a job or not.

It would also be nice to be able to see the iviting clients' profile within the app, at least a small blurb about them, how long have they been a client, what is their rating etc. Again without having to click out to the website which isn't very mobile responsive. I don't like to do all my communications on the phone but sometimes we all have to and this app is fairly rudimentary.

#1 When I search for jobs by typing key words in search bar from find job page, I get unchronologically listed jobs, although they are supposed to be chronologically showed. See attached.

#2 I tried to fix my issue with photo on support / tickets page by reuploading same photo on Upwork. Now my photo on Upwork when I go through messages and when I look at my profile from find page are oddly cropped. Just my head. When I search myself among freelancers my photo is fine and as it should be.

#3 Did I mention something happened to notifications? I click that little yellow dot, it tries to load most recent notifications, it fails, and I see only "see all notifications" message. When I click on that it shows in bold newest notifications. After that yellow dot keeps signaling there are new notifications, while those are the same old notifications.

Hi Vesna,

Thank you for sharing your feedback, I'll forward these issues to our respective teams and you'll receive an update soon.

Hi Vesna,

As a follow-up regarding your first point, our team confirmed jobs tagged as Interesting are not affected when the newest filter is used and will be displayed at the top of the list.

As for the notification indicator issue you described, I wasn't able to replicate it when using your account. Could you please take a screenshot and create a ticket if you experience the issue again?

You should really rethink budget categories entry, intermediate and expert. I see people are chosing for example expert - willing to pay highest rate, and then in job description explicitly say they pay up to $33. Or they choose expert and you see history for that type of job never paid above $15, and average price they pay on the right bar is around $12.

This is misleading and harmful for freelancers because we use filters to avoid cheap jobs, then we spend connects on exactly those types of jobs we tried to avoid, and it goes to waste because client will ignore application with rate above his budget.

If you have categories like that force clients to choose exact hourly rate range they are ok with. They'll have less irrelevant applications, and freelancers will less spend time and connects in futile.

____________
Don't correct my grammar!

I agree with Vesna about the budget/skill-level categories.

I don't think the problem lies in clients trying to get a high skill level at low a price.  Let them try. It's a free market, and they may succeed. I think the problem lies in the fact that two different parameters (skill level required and how much the client is willing to pay) have been combined into one.

I suggest separating the two. Have a pure skill-level field that says nothing about money; and, for hourly jobs, have a field for the client to say what hourly rate they're willing to pay. For fixed-price jobs clients already have a field for saying how much they're willing to pay ("Budget"), so this would make the two types of job more consistent.

Disclaimer: I've only been on Upwork for a couple of months.

I vary my pricing.  It depends on the task.  Some are simple and I can do it in my sleep so I put a lower price.  Also if it's a job I really want I may put a lower price to be more competitive.

If Upwork has scanned a file and deemed it to be unsafe regardless of the extension I'd like to know about it and not have to find out after I downloaded it that it's malicious.

Personally I like the mobile app although today I wasn't able to update a saved search for jobs with the same saved search name.  I had to use the website. But receiving alerts is great when I'm away from my desk walking the dog.

Wouldn't knowing how to do something in your sleep mean you're experienced, so it costs more?

Isn't there a limit under which you are not willing to go? Price that's too low for you? I'm not addressing the fact there are cheap and expensive jobs, but what I personally am not willing to accept, and information I have is misleading. Highest rate for design jobs were never up to $33. It may be for removing background from image, but not for presentations.

I don't know what Upwork does with files. Files have restrictions and I'm unable to download them. After I ask client to resend I get that same file and it's not infected. That means Upwork just put restriction no matter what status of the file is - infected or not.

____________
Don't correct my grammar!

I had the same problem a couple of days ago: not being able to download a file attached to a job description because Upwork deemed it unsafe.  It was a zip file that probably contained a macro-enabled Excel file.

I think we (clients and freelancers) should be told what sort of criteria the software uses for deciding that a file is dangerous, so we can do our best to avoid having our files blocked in this way. I frequently attach macro-enabled Excel files to my proposals as demos. I know that at least some of these have not been blocked, but now I'm worried that others may be.

Alternatively, we should be told at the time we submit a proposal (or job description) if our file is considered unsafe, and given a chance to revise the proposal.

I just came across another job description with a blocked attachment, another macro-enabled Excel file (this time not zipped). It's beginning to look like Upwork is blocking all such files, which is going to be a nuisance, since much of my work involves them.

It doesn't block just macro enabled files. I work with .pptx. PowerPoint with macro enabled has different extension, .pptm. Still, from time to time I can't download .pptx.

My client couldn't open my file that I submitted last night. blah

looks like we're gonna have to send in two places, and I hate that cuz I like to make them go to the submit area where it's easier for them to click the release funds button.

How do I delete previously saved search in my job feed? I don't see an option for it. Is this a glitch or a feature?

Edit: Nevermind, I found out how to do it.

Category intermediate ($$):

"Are you ok with $4.50 per hour pay?"

All job titles are now default black, when you hover they are green, instead of all them being green, and after a visit black. Can you fix it?

I'm pretty sure you have a bug with answers inside job posts, too.

Last time I was hiring I asked two questions and it seemed I can't get to see aswers.

Worse, I excluded cover letter, and I was only able to see cover letters, instead of answers.

Anyway, today I have a guy asking me a question in his job post, to which I obviously have replied, and he asked me that question again in interview. That means he was not able to see answer, or it was not showed clearly enough.

Can you check? This is pretty important.

I am not in their preferred location and I want filter to exclude "US only" jobs from my job feed, or at least feedback option (see attached file) to report this.

Thanks for sharing your feedback, Vesna. You can send feedback to the team by scrolling down on your home page and clicking 'Feedback' in the left bottom corner. While the team can't respond every comment, please know that we read and appreciate every suggestion that comes our way.

You know that thumb down right next to the job post? I would love to have option there on that list to report specific job as not being suitable for me because I'm not in client's preferred location.

Or to have an indication before I click on the job.

Or to have a filter out for it because it's annoying to open 3, 4, 5 jobs just to see I don't fit criteria.

Why do I have an option to withdraw proposal on job that's sitting in my archived proposals and is already closed?

Fixed price jobs are confusing.

I agreed with my client for about three milestones, total $300.

His intial job post was set to $150.

He funded only first milestone, $50.

However, what I see is a message from Upwork that client sees he will give me $150.

How is this so? This is neither what we agreed in total, neither what is funded.

If I'm not clear enough, attached is a screenshot.
