A client has requested that we have a phone conversation. I note that there is a phone icon on Upwork. Can I use that for the phone conversation the client wants? If so, how. What about the facetime icon?

You can try... I've never managed to make it work and use Skype for calls instead.

What the hell? Why not use Skype? It works.
I have attempted to use the Upwork voice call thing with at least 3 clients and it never ONCE worked. There are countless posts from people stating that it does not work for them.
I am too much of a professional to put myself or my clients through another embarrassing time-wasting experience like that ever again.

I just tried the voice call option this week and the sound was horrible, so much echo it was almost impossible to hear what was said. Note it is still beta. I don't recommend it, but maybe other people's experience is better.

I've never heard of anyone who successfully used the phone or video functions in UW messaging. (When UW needed to do ID verification with me last summer, it wouldn't even work and we had to step over to Skype.) I don't bother trying because when there's wasted time, annoyance, or awkwardness for any reason, what the client will remember later is that there was some hassled connected with using Upwork and/or working with me.
I use Skype, I use phone, and occasionally use Google Hangouts at a client's request (but only after vetting the client--scammers looking to prey on UW newcomers are notorious for luring them to Google Hangouts).
