Using personnel email to communicate with a client

I am going through initial environment setup and business requirements discussion. Is it OK to use  personal email for that? Or it has to be Messages - Upwork?

Absolutely! You can use whatever suits you and the client! Once you have a contract in place, you can use whatever means of communication you like.
