A very long-term client (over a year, couple of grand paid) has suddenly got 'payment is unverified' in orange next to their name.
Could this be an expired credit card issue? If not, can someone explain what could have happened.
I could approach the client, but just wondered if anyone knows how bad this is before I do.

Easily. It's the end of the month and credit cards expire at the end of a month.
Because any hours logged this week would be charged next Monday (hence in the next month) a client account with a credit card that expires end of 8 / 2017 would be put on hold now so no hours could be logged when the payment method it would be charged to will be expired at the time it will expire.
You're top-rated, Louisa. Why not do a live chat and see what or if they can tell you anything.
Directly asking a client about their finances could be a little iffy.
There may be temporary issues with the client's payment method and it'll show as unverified until they fix them. As Petra explained, if the issues aren't resolved, the client's account can be put on hold. If it's a fixed-price contract, the client won't be able to release funded money before they fix the issue. If it's an hourly contract, it'll be put on hold until the issue is resolved but you'll still get paid if you logged hours according to the requirements of the Hourly Protection.
Louisa, last year the same thing happened with one of my largest and most long-term clients. It was an expiration issue that was quickly solved. Hopefully it will be the same for you.
