Want some possible solutions

Hi,

I wanted to ask that I have a client on Upwork and we are communicating and working through Upwork. I have some issues with the client regarding his project as he is not co-operating with me, Chang requirements every time, and now I'm done with this client and don't want to work with him anymore.

As per Upwork policy, I can file a dispute but I don't want to go with it as I want to solve the matter very calmly.

Please share some possible solutions where both of us can't get any reviews on the profile.

Look forward to hear from you soon.

Thanks.

ACCEPTED SOLUTION

If you don't want to work with the client anymore, don't.

Umair: you are correct in your desire to AVOID filing a dispute.

Disputes SHOULD be avoided. Moreover, you can NOT file a dispute simply because you do not want to work for a client any more. That is not the basis for filing a dispute.

A freelancer may close a contract at any time, for any reason. You do not need anyone's permission to do so.

It is best if you end things as amicably as possible.

You can simply inform the client that you wish him well with his project, but that things have recently changed for you and you will not be able to continue working on his project. It is NOT NECESSARY for you to "blame" him or identify him as the reason you don't want to work on the project any more. You are allowed to do so, but not required to do so.

Another possibility is to very directly tell him:

"Eugene: I appreciate the opportunity I have had to work on the project, but the new requests and you have made are not within the range of things that I work on. I would be the wrong person for those tasks. I wish you well as you complete the project with other team members."

If you have already been working on the project and provided quality work to the client, and if you have already been paid something for this work, then there is no reason to assume that you would face any problems due to this contract closing, or due to the feedback you receive.

Ending a contract at some point is NORMAL. It is part of freelancing. No Upwork contract is intended to go on forever.

If what concerns you most is "no feedback on the profile" then unfortunately the only option is not to be paid anything.

However, private feedback can still be left, and "nothing paid" contracts do have the ability to hurt your JSS.

Is there no way to set healthy boundaries and talk to your client as one business-partner to the other? There may be no need for this to get confrontational at all. Set healthy boundaries and maintain them to get the contract to an end where nobody is upset.

Hi petra,

There is no way to set healthy boundaries and talk to my client as I have already talked to him.

Please purpose a possible solution, if I end the project the client will surely give me a -ve feedback.

Thanks.

Have you been paid anything under the contract yet?

Is it an hourly or fixed rate contract?

Normally I'd have said "Use your top rated perk" but I see you've already used it and haven't completed 10 contracts since so can't use it at the moment and another bad outcome could easily knock you below the 90% mark...

In January those two 3 star contracts will fall out of your 6 month JSS window, so maybe leave the contract open until then if the client has stopped communicating anyway?

Also, try and do a few short contracts to get above the 10 completed contracts since you last used the perk, so you have it available again.

You may also want to take a long, hard look at how the problems with all those contracts (4 out of 10 contracts in 6 months going so badly wrong is a bit scary...)  happened and how you can avoid the same issues in the future.

Yes, I have been paid under the contract.

The contract is based on a fixed price under milestones and I have already delivered two milestones.

Well, I don't want to leave the contract open.

I think the better way is to file a dispute against the client because this is the last solution I have in mind. Let me know if you have any other.

Why do you want to file a dispute?

Does the client owe you money?

Do you think filing a dispute will improve the feedback the client will leave you?

The client didn't respond from last week.

If I file a dispute then client is unable to give me feedback.

Who told you that? (It is wrong!)

You can't file a dispute for a client not responding to you....

Petra, If you have any solution to solve this problem then please share your thoughts.

One of my friends told me that.

Your friend is wrong.

I already gave you suggestions.

The other option is to close the contract now and risk poor feedback knocking you out of being top rated.

Petra, Thank you.

I'll let you know if I need your assistance to close the project.
