I had two invitations to interview this morning from hourly jobs - both great opportunites. But in both cases, they asked for a time estimate. I understand that we all have budgets. But both jobs are fairly complicated. I'm not sure how I could estimate how many hours each job would entail since they were both full custom web builds. It might be 20 hours, but then the client might ask for a series of changes, and more changes, and more. Which is fine, I aim to please.
Anyhow, my question is - how do you respond to this question when you feel "iffy" about providing an exact number? Any tips on handling this question?

I do not know your line of work. The way I respond is,"I will use Upwork's time tracker APP which will let them check every move you make via screen shots, mouse clicks and cursor movement."
In some cases estimate the time and tell them this is for like a one shot deal, if they require any edits or revisions the time colud be more. In some cases I suggest a max. hour cap. I am willing to suck up the extra time. In my one the projects, the client was very understanding. They 'released' me from my max hour constraint and gave me more hours twice.

I estimate 20 hours billed time with the following assumptions:
The statement of work specifies the functionality and look to be delivered.
You will make information readily available and respond quickly to any questions.
The twenty hours includes two hours for change orders. If changes cannot be completed in two hours of work, then I will charge for additional work with your prior approval.
