On Upwork messaging, recent messages are marked as either today or yesterday, but for older messages, it will show the day including the date. You can view this by scrolling up.

When I scroll up and down in the messages room, it says "Loading Messages" in the left-hand corner. Which has been placed on top of the date area. And the date is hidden behind a semi-transparent banner.
I know I wasn't the only one who couldn't see it. And I still can't really detect it in my earlier screenshots! Just to be clear - the date area is "showing" in both. I didn't cover it up.
