My will to work is usually limited by Upwork's conditions. Because I don't get a contract you hide my profile, not taking into account I have used all my connects seeking for one. The video verification came. You called me, saw me. I asked a few questions but the person was cold enough to not answer and hang up. She was happy seeing me for 30 seconds and then made my profile visible again. If we are submitted to this verification treatment, I think at least we deserve to get a "Verified" tag from you on our profile, visible to our recruiters as your part of verifying I am real.

Hi Nora,
Thank you for your feedback. The ultimate goal is to verify all freelancer profiles on the platform. That's why there are no plans to add a verification badge to Upwork profiles at the moment.

Thank you for your quick reply. Maybe you should make it clearer that in the video call you will not be answering any questions from us and that seeing us is your only goal. That way, we wouldn't have further expectations.

Nora, Upwork DOES take into account that you're using up all of your connects without being hired. What that means is that none of the many clients you're reaching out to want to hire you. Why would Upwork see that as a good thing?
There's a separate system for dealing with that. When a freelancer keeps submitting a lot of proposals and not getting hired, Upwork removes that freelancer from the platform, since he or she is obviously not a good match for the work that's available here.

Video calls can be scary, for many reasons. While I agree verification is necessary, it does not have to take on police-state proportions. Upwork could be a little less military in its approach.

They can't provide a "verified" badge because that would be interpreted as an endorsement and lead to problems when those "verified" freelancers perform badly and clients are upset because they thought the freelancer was vetted in some way.

Agree. Also, since freelancers can't initiate verification, it would disadvantage freelancers who simply haven't been selected for verification yet (and, ironically, perhaps advantage those who triggered verification because something was suspect about the account).
