Why my job success score is down two times (86% to 71% first time to 65% second time) within 4 weeks

Hi, upworkers,

I was hired by one client who wanted me to do his projects for 3 months, but, after two weeks the client ended his contract without mentioned the exact reason, and I also said nothing about canceling his contract, and I gave him good feedback with five stars.

But, the client gave me 4.30 stars with good comment, and my job success scores were decreased from 86% to 71%. So, I contacted with the client, and then the client gave me five stars feedback with good comments, and he also gave me a small job for $5, and I completed the second job successfully too, and the client gave me five stars feedback with good comments this time, but, my job success scores were again decreased from 71% to 65 %!

Please help me to solve this issue.

Note: He (the client) was my previous client in the last year, and at that time he gave me 4.8 stars feedback without comments.

Regards

Waled

Hi Md. Waled,

Job Success Scores reflect a wide range of factors such as public and private feedback, long-term contracts, and repeat ones. Because this information isn’t included in a freelancer’s star rating, your JSS may differ dramatically from your star rating. You can monitor your Job Success Score on your My Stats page. Please check out this Blog for more info about what affects your score and what you can do to improve it. Thanks!

Don't work with that client again, he's clearly giving you poor private feedback....

And You still defend this private feedback every where!, This client manipulated the kind guy twice!, firstly he gave him very good public feedback, even he hired him again!!!! ( means he liked his work to the maximum ). however, he ruined his profile completely in private. I saw freelancer`s profile, and it is 100% unfair for this guy to have 65% JSS while he has all those good feedbacks.

**Edited for Community Guidelines**. The client gave less than "very good" public feedback, and changed it after being harassed to do so by the OP. For all we know most of his public are like that.

This is exactly why we have a JSS and private feedback in the first place. Because unprofessional freelancers kept begging, pushing and harassing clients to change their (public) feedback.

This is what made public feedback almost worthless.

Really? Tell us more: You examined all his work and spoke to all his clients? Yes? No? So how **Edited for Community Guidelines** would you have the faintest idea whether it is or isn't fair?

Hi Petra R,

I think you said enough about your personal tested speeches here, rather telling something for him to solve his issues (and yes, he stopped doing the client’s tasks already, and he promised that he won’t work for the client in the future too).

Yes, Petra, there are many unprofessional freelancers out there in the upwork marketplace, and they also don’t hesitate to beg money to the client (you forgot to mention this one), and you should remember this “Diamond cuts diamond” I meant, the clients who have no knowledge at all about the skills that they want to hire, and also there are some clients who want to complete their several projects within a little budget. So, here is the chaotic environment where the unprofessional freelancers and the zero-knowledge clients (including the tight budget clients) get started your mentioned war very politely.  The guy who has wanted to solve his JSS scores down issues, he is totally outside the war environment.

Thanks Petra

Waled

I read all what clients said about him publicly :), nearly all of his tasks are atleast very good. and don`t go out of the topic please!. We are facing as issue where a client gave a freelancer a good public feedback, and even rehired him, but behind the closed doors he ruined his profile.

How does the private feedback system deal with this kind of clients? and please don`t say ( Whoever doesn`t like the private feedback system must have poor JSS because obviously I don`t ). all my contracts are long term, and there is no intention for me or my clients to end the relationship in the near future.

Finally I hope " Edited for community guidelines " part doesn`t mean you tried to insult me. It will not be the first time, and it is very very clear to me after following your replies to freelancers that you always think you are unbeatable in any discussion, which is also very clear to be untrue. Thanks 🙂

You missed the part where the client originally gave him poor(er) public feedback, and he then went and asked the client to change it. Poor public feedback usually goes hand in hand with poor private feedback (which is often lower because the client does not fear repercussions such as being harassed, begged or even threatened by unprofessional freelancers to change the feedback)

You can also "read between the lines" - A client who hires someone for a 3 month project and then apruptly ends the contract after 2 weeks is unlikely to be a client who is 100% thrilled with how things are going, wouldn't you agree?

At the end of the day, whether you like the fact that the JSS is calculated the way it is or whether you hate the way it is calculated as it is: The reality remains that it is what it is and you can either make it work for you or you can find a different site that is more to your liking. It really is what it is.

I don't "defend" it - I simply tell it how it is.

You don't get to demand a thing. It is a violation of forum guidelines to post client communication and details, so a moderator will have removed those details.

It makes no difference anyway. Concentrate on doing well in your future contracts so your JSS goes up again. It's all you can do.

It doesn't matter. Private feedback can neither be disputed nor changed. Start looking forward and start planning your recovery.

As the old saying goes: "Don't look back, you're not going that way."

Learn from it and move on.

Probably the client was understandably annoyed when you asked him to change feedback and gave you very bad private feedback on that small $5 job, so that backfired.

We hear over and over again just how much this "Please change my feedback" stuff irritates clients.

I really wish Upwork would just simply do away with that altogether.

how can you give a client 5 stars if he doesn't even tell you why he closed the project? That kind of information is valuable for future freelancers who are going to work with him..

The problem is that you think reviews are a game and you got desperate in trying to improve them, which backfired on you... asking for a client to change his feedback is a very risky move.. i would change to 1 star if a freelancer begged me to change it...

Hi Felipe H,

Ok, so, please let me explain it clearly for you.

The client hired me for 3 months to rank his two specific keywords on the major search engine (I am an SEO professional), and the salary was $100 for each month, and besides me, the client hired more two freelancers for the same projects.

The client wanted me to submit his tasks each week. So, I submitted the tasks report the first week, and the client was satisfied with my tasks report, but in the second week, he accepted the tasks report & told me, he was going to end this contract because his client had told him to stop this project.

As a newbie freelancer, I said nothing about his canceling project (suddenly), and he gave me $50 for the two weeks. So, I naturally gave him 5 stars rating with good comments feedback, and I also hoped to get the same feedback from him.

Note: the other two freelancers have also the same issues with their JSS scores down after ending the client projects.

Thanks

Waled
