Why was I asked to provide an employer W9 when setting up freelance profile?

Hello,

I'm new to Upwork and so is my employer. While setting up my profile as a freelancer I was asked to provide a W9, business name, etc. Fast foward: The invoice that was generated has From: My name with employer company and Bill: Employer name. Is this correct? Am I charging the employer for my services or have I done something wrong?
