Will cancelled contract (work no longer needed) with zero activity affect JSS?

Hi everyone,

I recently had a former client reach back out needing more work. Our last contract ended successfully with a 5 star review.

He sent me a second job offer after we discussed the scope and project needs. However, after accepting the offer, I stopped hearing from the client altogether.

I followed up consistently and finally heard back after a month. The client has been busy and needs to hold off on having the work done.

He asked if he should "pause" the hourly contract or cancel it altogether.

My question is:

Which will have a more negative affect on my JSS - pausing or cancelling?

I don't want to pause it in case he decides not to restart the job at all.

I'd rather suggest he cancel it, with the reason he submits to Upwork being, "job no longer needed."

I'd like to get some more experienced feedback before asking that, though.

If he cancels the contract and indicates that the work was no longer needed (in other words, doesn't indicate that the reason was because of me), will my JSS still go down?

If that does still bring my JSS down, does anyone know whether or not an inactive/paused contract would hurt my JSS more or less?

Thanks for your help.

if there was money billed to the contract, you want to close it not cancel it

Thanks for the reply, Jennifer.

There was no money billed. As soon as the contract was opened, I stopped hearing from him. No work has been done, and he's not sure when he will need work in the future.

He could just pause the contract, but I have no idea how long it will be until he will need work done. It could be several months from now or more.

He can also cancel it and indicate the work no longer needed to be done.

Which would be the better route? An inactive contract? Or one that has been cancelled, with indication that the job was no longer needed?

Cancelled jobs with no money exchanged are not good.

The JSS craves only one outcome: "job completed successfully".

Everything else counts as negative (unless they introduced a "neutral option" lately).

If the client cancels the job, there will be private feedback. Unless he ticks a 9 or 10 on the "would he recommend you" scale, it could have repercussions.

If I were you, I would ask him to pause it. I, from personal experience, don't believe in the negative impact of idle contracts. Especially not if they're hourly contracts.

I am sure others will have differing opinions.

I'm with Ella I would pause it then if there was no money exchanged. They say that cancelled contracts don't affect you, but then the trick is that nothing from the dropdown is positive except "job completed successfully" when they cancel, and that's where they get you.

I'd go for pausing it and then in a few weeks close it yourself choosing job completed successfully.

I have same exactly problem so I think it's better to add and ask here rather than creating a new post. I have a long-term client in which I've worked in several Upwork contracts and gain of his 100% satisfaction. Recently, there is 1 project that he had direction of changes and no longer needed this work done (the contract was not started or billed yet, but offer sent and accepted). Eventually, he had to close/cancel the contract but here is his experience (from the message he sent me after closing)

That was just an acident. Problme with page refresh at the time i filling it out. I cant change it now as the contract is closed. If you can get upwork to open up the comments section then i will modify it

I'm not sure if this will affect my JSS calculation or is there anything we can rectify things since the client is willing to do that and the closing action is not his willingness in the beginning

Thanks,

Ngoc

Can't change what? If the client wants to leave a public review, you can authorize him to do so.

Hi Ngoc,

You may enable your client to change your feedback for you by following the steps noted in this help article.

Seems I don't have the option to allow client changing his feedback. Please see screenshot.

Hi Ngoc,

I had asked the help of the Customer Support Team, and they have confirmed that since there were no earnings for this contract, no public feedback will be left on the contract. As such, you will not be able to enable the client to leave/edit public feedback on the contract.

Avery,

My concern is more about private feedback which affects JSS directly. Since I and even the client didn't know which was the score has been eaten up by the system, lower one can cause my JSS dropped dramatically, which is not anything the client wants to do intentionally. I wonder if is there any way to rectify this since this is definitely a system issue, which should not affect freelancer's reputation.

It was a fixed price contract. My client has given me to much work than he said. So I requested him to increased price but he refused to do that.So I surrendered that it was not possible from my end to do the heavy work . Then I requested him to end the contract but he didn't.So after long pause I have ended the contract of fixed price without billing with a positive rating .The client has not given any feedback. I was totally unaware to this help forum where solutions can be found.I think I have done great mistake. Is my JSS is going to affect?

If no money was paid, there is no public feedback that can be left and none that can be changed.

Private feedback can not be changed anyway. This is done and dusted.

In future do not accept contracts unless you have what you need to start working and completing at least the first milestone or log some time under an hourly contract.

Kristen - I would pause the contract and later on, close it yourself. But some advice. In the future make sure you have all questions answered, all information provided and at least some of the files/material/work BEFORE you acdept the contract.
