Wire Transfer Payment Method is not stable.

Hello Upwork and Freelancers,

There is the problem in wire transfer payment method and therefore I would like to ask question. The problem is sometimes this method doesn't work and all funds return back to your Upwork balance. For me it doesn't work approximatelly each 4th time (just stats). So, I lost additional $30, because withdrawal fee is not restored together with the funds which return back to the account. Also, I lost much time to get funds to my beneficiary bank, because this process may take 2 weeks.

I can just imagine the cause of this issue. I think Escrow agen used by Upwork uses different correspondent banks to send funds to freelancer's beneficiary bank account. Possible that these correspondent banks are used by Escrow in some random order or may be it depends of another criteria (for instance time of day). Some of used correspondent banks doesn't work with freelancer's beneficiary bank. Possible they even don't know that some beneficiary bank exist. I don't know ... but problem exists ... and I know that another freelancers have the same issue.

I asked Upwork about this issue and they helped me (thank you very much!) to return money back. Today, I had the same strange random issue, but I didn't contact support yet (I will do that later).

So, I would like to raise some question in order not to forget about that and up this topic in the community. The question is ... I know that Upwork team works on the payment method which will allow freelancers to use custom correspondent/intermediate bank. When, approxymatelly, such important feature will be completed and avaialble in Upwork production?

Best regards,
Maxim

Yes, I understood that. It is what I said, Upwork payment has issue/bug and Uprowk is not able to fix that.
If Upwork is not able to fix its issues, then only way for freelancer to find workaround. Correct? I think yes.

Best regards,
Maxim

Hi Maxim,

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'll check the information you shared with our team and follow up on the thread with an update soon.

Thank you very much!
This problem is not new. I already has a long list of messages with support where we are discussing that (messages have Ref IDs to bad transactions). Support tried to close by payment method, but the problem that this payment method works in 75% cases of all withdrawals. It means payment method (my beneficiary bank) is good and there is something which is not stable in Escrow side. It is why I am asking about some payment method (we also discussed that with support) which will allow to use custome intermediary bank.

Hello.

Same happened for me with last payment. I reached support and they will investigate this issue (request trace) only in 8 business days. The only thing that I can do os wait. Meanwhile my money stuck somwere for 2 weeks...

Hope that Upwork will investigate this issue not only by providing trace but also more deep investigation of the issue. After all that is why we (freelancers) are paying money to Upwork.

Have a good day.

Hi Maxim and Alex,

At this time, users cannot specify an intermediary bank for their wire transfer withdrawals and our partner bank selects intermediary banks. I can confirm our team is working on adding the feature where users can specify their preferred intermediary banks but this is not on our immediate road map, and we don't have any updates at this time. We'll post an announcement once we receive more information and an ETA for the update.

Note that you can consider using the Direct to Local Bank payment method for withdrawing your earnings as an alternative.

Hi ะ’ะปะฐะดะธะผะธั€,

Currently, I could not use Direct to Bank payment, because it is for RUB currency, but my the current contract is USD. It will take much time to change the contract, because our bank is verry careful (even anoying) to check new contract. It may take month and even more.

Another, very important reason is Upwork USD-RUB exchange rate is too low. For instance, today exchange rate: Upwork - 53.3, my bank - 55.5 (it is about 12 000 rub lost every month). If there will be more clients (usually I have more, I will lost much more).

So, we need the current wire transfer payment method to be stable or some payment method which allows to use custom intermediary bank.

Best regards,
Maxim

Hi Vladimir,

Is it possible that I myself to contact Escrow and ask questions why theirs system is not stable and why some transactions are not success? May be their system is enough flexible to configure what intermediate banks are used depending of beneficiary bank SWIFT (I just guess). I am pretty sure that Upwork didn't explain the problem to Escrow correctly and just redirect some bad response code from Escrow to me ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you,
Maxim

Maxim,

Unfortunately, setting up an intermediary bank isn't currently possible as Vladimir explained and Upwork's payment processing partner would not be able to help with that either. This is on the team's roadmap and we'll keep users updated about any changes.

Thank you.

Upwork

Valeria,

So, it is not known when this Upwork issue/bug will be fixed.
I am working with Upwork since 2008-2009 year (full time, without delays and enough big hourly rate). I have never seen such level issue before in Upwork and it is sad to hear that Upwork is not able to fix that. So, if Upwork can't do that then I need to think how resolve that by myself. Unfortunatelly, another payment methods suggested by Upwork can't replace USD Wiretransfer payment method, because I work in my country legally, I pay all the taxes.

Best regards,
Maxim

Maxim,

Unfortunately, we don't have any details about when an option to manually set up an intermediary bank will be available. Meanwhile, the intermediary bank will be determined by the partner bank.

Upwork wiretranfer payement method still doesn't work correctly. Today, my earnings returns back to Upwork balance again. As, I said it is Upwork issue related to wiretransfer payment method which is not stable.

Sometimes, it is not clear to me why freelancers pay so big fee, but Upwork could not fix urgent issues.

Question ...

It's a long time I did not use the wire transfer. Last time due to some problems on PayPal I had to use wire transfer.

I simply don't remember how long it takes usually wire trasfer to be completed and should I get any message from the sytem that transfer is accomplished?

Thanks

It is Saturday. No bank transactions are processed at the weekend. It tends to take 1 to 3 business days ( that excludes Saturdays and Sundays) for wire transfers to reach the receiving account.

Thank you Petra.

Yes, I know for weekends - that'sperfectly OK.

Should I get any notification from Upwork that transfer actually was made?
(Actually I released funds when there was early morning on Friday in US).

For now I have only one message from the system that transfer preccessed or so?

I don't remember how does it work.

I am in Egypt. Both agency and profile accounts are using Wire Transfer and are working fine within like 2 business days only. I guess it depends on your country and may be your bank.

Why not trying to see which banks are more 'Upwork-friendly' and create your account there?
