I would imagine if he hired you for an hourly contract, he would be obliged to pay for any hours you did up until the time he cancelled the contract.  Do not send him anything now that he has cancelled it.

You should be paid for all hours worked up until the client cancelled the project. You won't be paid for any work completed after the project was cancelled. You shouldn't submit any designs before being hired, unless it's for some kind of paid test project. If the client speaks to eleven designers, they all submit designs, and he only hires one of them, then he's got eleven completed projects for the price of one.
