Sending clients your email address really isn't a problem with real clients.

A real client (whose intent it is to hire you and have you work on a project for them, and pay you money) has no interest in messing around with your email address and sending you any spam email or wasting your time.

But if you're not sure about somebody, or if you want added security, of you want to diminish the chances that your primary email address will be used by somebody in annoying ways, then you can do a couple of things:

- Don't give these clients or prospective clients your primary email address. Give them a burner email address that auto-forwards to your real email address.

- Tell prospective clients who ask for your email address that they can simply send the files and instructions using Upwork messaging

- Tell prospective clients that you routinely provide your email address to clients after they send the "Hire" button and an official contract is in place.

If you don't trust him, then tell him it's okay for him to send the assignment details directly to you via Upwork messaging. Or create a temporary email address used only for this project and send him that email address.

Giving y our email address is ok. Some client don't like the hassel of logging into Upwork and finding the messages option.

Make sure of 3 things.

1. that you are hired through this site (you'll get an official notice and the job will appear under the My Jobs section.)

2. escrow is funded (before you start any work (no matter what the client may tell you

3. the clients account is verified (again, before y ou start any work)

Make sure the client understands and agrees to those 3 things,

Legitimate clients will sometimes want to communicate through email or Skype. But if you have a gut feeling that this is a scam, just don't do it.

Once I have been hired I routinely swap email addresses with my clients.

The Upwork platform has not proven itself to me to be completely reliable.  I tell clients this and let them know that if the Upwork site is down I can still get messages and files through if I have their email address.

This is after the the hire.....not before.

Hi. I see that this thread is more than a year old, but I have a question related to it. When a client requests my e-mail address and I'm about to give it to them, there's a pop up that warns me to stay safe and not take my conversation out of Upwork.

It sounds like a warning that I could lose my account because I might intend to take away clients from the platform. Is this it, or maybe it refers to the fact that I'm no longer protected by upwork somehow?

I have given my e-mail address to clients, even after the warning has popped up. I did this especially during a time period when Upwork was going off-line quite regularly and I needed to be able to exchange files with clients.

You might want to provide your e-mail address but also make it clear (in Messages) that (1) you will never accept any payment off-platform, and (2) when possible, Upwork "Messages" is your preferred method of communication.

Thank you, it's good to know that nothing bad happens if I decide to give them my e-mail. I didn't think that in the first place as it seemed a bit over the edge, but I didn't want to risk it.

It's just their way of reminding you that Big Brother is watching you.

I commonly communicate with clients off platform, but I copy the communication into the messages at Upwork to keep a record. I always let my clients know this.

I also submit final workproduct through Upwork.

Just remember to keep the work and the payment here on the platform and it's okay to communicate through other means.

Hi Darryl,

It is fine to share your email with a client but you should still make sure that you do not accept any payments for work off of the platform, that you have a contract in place before beginning any work, and also that the client has a verified payment method.

You are allowed to share your email address, just make sure the client hires you on Upwork and all payments go through Upwork!

You can share your email address with the client once you have accepted a job from them. You cannot share it with them during the interview stage which must be conducted on platforms messenger/in call function.
