Hello All,

I have noticed that most of the Freelancers dont like oDesk Connect policy. People loose all Connects but Clients dont hire anyone. So, there is no assurence that Job will be started or not. But we must loose all connects.

Most of the Freelancers dont like oDesk Connect policy. They also write it on forum. But oDesk does not listen us Smiley Sad . Its true that Freelancers represents oDesk brand. So, if we grow then oDesk can grow..........................

With this, oDesk is not fair at all! It's completely a very cruel policy. I don't think if oDesk management sat down and make just a simple analysis to find out the ratio between applied to offered job. Paying $2 per applied job with a very little chance even to be shortlisted for an interview is completely not at fair. It's no doubt that, some of the jobs receive more than 100 applications and only one freelancer is needed... this's saying, there's 1% chance to get the job but still you need to pay $2 to swim around 1% chance.

First of all, I don't see the reason why I'd pay $2 per job while they take 10% commission. But if it's a MUST policy, why charging such a big amount... why not $ 1 (Fixed) or even less than this sleight of hand of saying 2 Connects while into practice is ONLY one Job? Why deceiving? The first day when I read it's $10 for 10 Conncets, I thought those 10 Connects are 10 Raw Jobs but I ended applying ONLY 5 Jobs and everything was done! Up to now I've paid $ 50 and no even an offer for an interview! I know, oDesk here can provide a very simple argument that you need to apply only those jobs which you qualify without taking into account that, among of 10 or more applicants, only one will get the job, so the issue of qualifications here have a very little impact.

As you've said, may be oDesk Management don't listen but that shouldn't make us not to raise our voices. Taking that into account, I'd then like to advice and request the oDesk Management to do one of the following:

  • Stop charging any amount of $$ from jobs applied, or
  • Refund at least 50% of all paid Connects in the next Billing Cycle but the refunded Connects should not be included in the "Rollover Unused Connects" Plan

Do oDesk authorities read all these threads?

How can we convey our voice to Odesk authories?

Somebody reads them, because mine keep getting deleted.  Maybe they get deleted by the forum gurus or whatever they are called.

There are computers that do an excellent job of what's called "filtering". You know, if a person says they want 4.5 stars and above then the employer gets that.  Not just some guy that wants to apply anyway with 2 stars... They want North America, then only North America sees it....

Problem solved if oDesk was really interested in solving it.

re: "With this, oDesk is not fair at all!"

I don't think you understand what the word "fair" means.

Is oDesk treating you differently than they treat some other contractors? Is oDesk singling you out and making you adhere to different policies because of your name, or what country you live in, or what you look like?

Is oDesk forcing you to parcipate in their programs? Is somebody threatening you or coercing you to buy Connects or continue working through the oDesk platform?

There is a difference between "something that you don't like" and something being "unfair."

Often times systems, whether they be political, cultural or otherwise have a bias. Sure you don't have to participate in them if you don't want to, but that doesn't make them "fair".

Nice "return" Jon-Paul! There's a big difference between one's "opinion" and being "opinionated"!

Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback about the connects system. We do share your imput with the Team. I would like to point out that you do not have to upgrade your membership and purchase more connects. We have seen that most of successful freelancers need to submit much fewer than 30 applications per month to get work. Additionally, a lot of users have noticed that with the new system it is easier for qualified freelancers to stand out and get a job. Also, only in the case when the client or oDesk Team cancel the job posting, the connects you used to apply for the job will be returned to you.

@ @ Valerie

The new Connects system hurts us more than it helps us.

When I'm looking for positions I often have to withdraw applications weekly. Why? Because of non-serious job postings. Sure they look great because I only select buyers with experience and at least 4.5 Star rating. No newbies, though I did break my own rule recently and gave a new odesk employer a try and things went a bit south... Anyway, back to the first point. So I wait a week for the buyer to respond and if no answer, then I have to dump (withdraw) the application (unresponsive client) as to keep my 25 applications available to put in elsewhere and potentially meet far more serious buyers. Can I do that now? No. Use a "Connect" and it's gone.

You meet an employer that has a quality looking post. He wants a 500 word article to promote his product... You say, "OK looks good, I'll give him a shot". Next thing you know, you interview with the guy and come to find that in addition to the article, he he wants you to get him on the front page of the local newspaper... Sure it's a sarcastic example of a serious issue the commonly happens in various ways. Where employers are not clear on all they want and we end up screwed out of  "Connects".

Another one.... "Hourly - Expert ($$$)" See that anywhere? Meaningless... I know my rates aren't the lowest, nor really mid range for what I do. People respect my work though and my profile proves it, so I go after the "Hourly - Expert ($$$)". The guy ends up hiring a person for .50 (fifty cents) an hour... That's "Hourly - Expert ($$$)".. Come on... There go 2 "Connects".

The list goes on and on and on Valerie.

If oDesk was really serious about getting the right freelancers in front of the right employers - at no additional charge - they'd simply tidy up the current filtering system and not let people that don't meet the employers qualification apply at all.. That's the reality of the lack of necessity for the new "Connects" systems and those are just a few of the many ways it is a detriment to even the best of Freelancers on oDesk.
