"not active on upwork any more" in Billings & Earnings

I just checked my "Billings & Earnings" and stumbled over this

Is this something to expect will happen with every client who left Upwork?

And all over the globe, FLs frantically downloaded CSV documents in an attempt to preserve deets they might need later.

Racking my brain for a reason that change was necessary.

That's strange, even if they closed the account, the name should remain. Have you gotten any feedback about this from Upwork?

Nope. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.

Can someone else check his/her/their " Lifetime Billed" in the Billings & Earnings section for clients that now say "not active on upwork any more"?

There's none on mine. Although there is one that gives no details other than the amount billed.

That sounds also wrong.

I don't have any on mine, but all of my clients are still active on Upwork as far as I know, and some even message me occassionally just to say "hello".  However, it's completely unacceptable for Upwork to allow a client's name to simply be 'erased' from past payment histories in the freelancer's own records or 'changed' from what was on the original invoices. Invoices, receipts, and payment records are always supposed to be final, not 'changed' or 'erased' retroactively.   Even if the client is "no longer active", the NAME of the client that made the payments should still be showing.   Financial records that say "$X,XXX.00 paid by nobody" or "$X,XXX.00 paid by some company's name I can't remember"  probably don't go over too well in the event of an IRS audit.

Did the information on the actually invoices change?  That would be a mess if it did.

Jennifer and others,

The information in these reports reflects the information the client inputs into their account settings. If the client updates the Company Name field in their settings, it'll reflect in reports on the freelancer's end. It looks like that's what had happened in this case. This is not something Upwork updates without an action from client's end.

Sorry, but it is one thing to update an address, but the name of the client is on invoices ect. Changing this information retroactively messes up our paperwork. It is just a big no go.

A system that enables clients, by default, whether knowingly or otherwise, to change historical records is a seriously flawed and compromised system. I shudder to think of the liability issues that this programming lapse raises.

Exactly.  If a client ever conducted illegal business dealings on Upwork, all they'd have to do is simply 'deactivate' their Upwork account and log off to 'clear' the whole paper trail and 'shred' all the evidence on the way out, and the police  or FBI would never find a thing  lol  No wonder this place has become a magnet for criminals and scammers

Are there any plans to prevent clients from changing official documents any time they want?

This made me curious and nudged me to update my tax information from my name (sole proprietor/LLC) to my company name (filing as S Corp) since I changed my filing status this year. I checked an invoice from last year before and after I made the change. Before the change, it had my name. After I made the change, it had my business name. So, it's not just clients that can change information on invoices.

It does seem like the invoice should be immutable once it's generated. To me personally, this doesn't matter. But I can see where it would matter to some people, especially in regions that have stricter laws around what has to be on an invoice.

Here in Norway it is a big no-go, as well as invoices with missing addresses.
