Think about it for a second. Upwork makes its money by taking a commission from payments. Do you think they'd be OK if you got paid elsewhere?
You better make it clear in the message room that you're not up for something like that.
You are correct, this is not allowed as a prospective client needs to hire and pay you through Upwork, unless they pay the opt-out fee. This violation is known as disintermediation and I've reported the client to our team. Please reports similar requests to Customer Support and provide appropriate screenshots, so our team can take action.
Please note that you should start working only after your client verifies their payment method, you have an active contract under your My Jobs tab and the contract is covered by the appropriate Upwork Payment protection program.
