Yes, before you are hired for a job, all communication with the client should take place on Upwork.

Hello Jeffrey!

Honestly, I'd step away from this one. If he wants a trial, there's no reason why he can't do it on Upwork. In fact, I'd say RUN. It'll most probably end in a scam attempt.

To me, this is screaming scam from high up on the rooftops.

Hi Jeffrey,

Thank you for reaching out and reporting this. I totally agree with Babar and Petra. You're also correct that sharing contact information before a contract has started is against Upwork's Terms of Service and that all communications prior to the contract starting must take place on Upwork.

I've shared your report with our Trust & Safety team for further review. They will surely look into this job and take action accordingly if necessary. We also encourage you to let us know if you find anything suspicious has happened by using the Flag as Inappropriate option throughout the platform. You can learn more about user reporting here.

You may want to check this help article and this thread for more information on how to stay safe on Upwork.

These account should be banned right ?because they just wasting our cconnects applying for this job. How do we report them?

Hi Jeffrey,

I understand your concern. Our Trust and Safety team is already working hard to rid our marketplace of all inappropriate jobs and users. I suggest you check out this course for more tips on staying safe on Upwork and please use the flag option found on each job post or message anytime you’d like to report a violation.

Thank you,

Pradeep

Never ever agree to that off-platform "trial" even if the client is genuine. Keep the communication on platform always,  and you can charge less for the test for genuine client (well i wont even recommend that but upto your preference) but never ever do it for Free, not even the trial.

if the client is new and has no reviews or previous job record then that's a scammer alert!
