Earn an Upwork Skill Certification: Web, Mobile, and Software Development


We know that being certified in certain skills can help you attract and build trust with prospective clients. That’s why we developed skills certifications.

Upwork Skill Certifications are currently invitation-only. We hope to add more skill categories in the future.

To become skill-certified in Web, Mobile, and Software Development, you first need to be invited and meet the requirements of the certification. Next, you'll need to complete the certification process.

Earn a Certification in Web, Mobile, and Software Development

The certification assesses a mix of soft and hard skills across a range of question types: multiple-choice, text, video, and open coding. Question types may vary depending on the skill being assessed.

The Upwork Skill Certification assessments are administered through an assessment platform called Vervoe.

About Vervoe


Vervoe is a platform that provides assessments and simulations to evaluate talent. Vervoe assessments are designed to test users skills, knowledge, and abilities relevant to specific role types. These assessments often include a combination of tasks, questions, and simulations tailored to the specific use case.

Multiple Choice 

A multiple-choice question is a type of assessment item where the test-taker is presented with a question or statement followed by several options. The test-taker's task is to select the correct answer from among the provided choices. 

Text

A text response question in Vervoe is designed to evaluate a test-takers' written communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and knowledge of the subject matter. This type of question looks to assess a test-takers' ability to articulate their thoughts clearly, provide relevant information, and demonstrate their understanding of the topic at hand. It's an effective way to gauge how well test-takers' can express themselves in writing and how they approach problem-solving tasks.

Video

A video response question in Vervoe is a unique way to gauge the test-takers' verbal communication skills when it comes to providing a solution to a problem. 

Coding

Vervoe provides a code compiler where test-takers' can write and compile code directly within their web browser. The assessments can include a range of tasks, such as debugging, algorithmic problems, or project-based assignments.

Vervoe tips 

If this is your first online assessment or if you're looking to improve your assessment skills, you've come to the right place! Here are some tips for a positive experience:

  1. Find your email invitation in your inbox, including your Spam/Junk folder, if needed.
  2. Ensure you're using a supported browser and device. We recommend using a desktop or laptop for optimal performance. 
  3. Test your equipment and internet connection before starting.
  4. Carefully read all instructions provided. 
  5. Take your assessment in a quiet, uninterrupted environment within the given timeframe.
  6. Be mindful of any time limits and review your answers before submitting.
  7. Reach out to support@vervoe.com if you encounter any issues during the assessment.

Important Guidelines:

  1. When signing up and taking the test, use the email address associated with your Upwork account.
  2. Before taking the test, you will be asked to test your camera and microphone to ensure they are working properly.
  3. Read each question carefully and follow the instructions.
  4. During the video question, your full face needs to be visible and your room should be well-lit. We will compare the person we see in the video recording against the identification you submitted when you passed the Upwork ID verification process.
  5. When you choose to upload your video answer, do not exit the page until your upload is successful. It is encouraged to keep your video short and concise to help minimize the file size. 
  6. You have 90 minutes to complete the test. Please ensure you allocate enough time, as you can only take it once.
  7. Take the test in a room free of distractions and background noise.
  8. PLAGIARISM is strictly prohibited. You can be banned from taking any Upwork Skill Certification tests if you get caught plagiarizing even after you pass the test and get the badge.



Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I don't pass the test?

Nothing will display on your Upwork profile. If you followed all the guidelines but didn’t achieve a passing score, you may request to retake the test again in six months. To request a second test, send an email to assessments@upwork.com. If you take the test without following the guidelines, you cannot retake the test. At this time, we are not able to provide additional details when guidelines aren’t met, so we recommend paying close attention to them beforehand.



  • I can’t find my skills on the application form.

The current skills assessment list is regularly reviewed and updated. Should there be new skills added, it will be reflected in this article. Feel free to regularly check back for any updates.


  • I was invited for a development assessment, but can’t find my invitation link.

You may send an email to assessments@upwork.com and our talent admin team will assist you.


  • I received an invitation, but I don’t have time right now. Can I take the test later?

We know how busy schedules can get. Though we can’t guarantee your future eligibility or the future availability of each test, we’re happy to re-evaluate when you’re ready to take the test. Email assessments@upwork.com when you’re ready to take the test. We will confirm the prior invitation and re-review eligibility and test availability then.


  • Can I get more than one skill certification?

At this time, we can only offer one skill assessment per freelancer. We may expand this in the future. If you’d like to check back for updates, feel free to reach out any time. You can also keep informed about news by being active in the Upwork Community and checking the Upwork Skill Certifications page for updates.


  • How do I report a technical issue I encountered while taking a coding assessment?
    While taking the assessment there is a help icon on the bottom right-hand side of the screen where you can send a message to Vervoe as you are completing the test, this raises a ticket with Vervoe’s support team in real-time. Please note that it is not a chatbot however, the Vervoe team responds with technical troubleshooting steps.

  • Is there a practice test for the skill-specific test?

At this time, we don’t have a practice test. The skill-specific test contains a combination of coding questions, multiple choice, video, communication and text questions that test your knowledge of a specific language or set of languages. If you are taking a test in a language, such as JavaScript, it tests the actual language (not frameworks).


  • When will I receive my results?

Test scores are manually reviewed and may take up to 10 business days before you receive your results. If it’s more than that, You may send an email to assessments@upwork.com and our talent admin team will assist you.


  • Can I use Google or other search engines to get some help with the questions?

You may utilize search engines to assist you during the test. However, it is imperative to maintain academic integrity throughout the process. Any form of plagiarism, including but not limited to copying content without proper attribution, will result in immediate disqualification from the current test and a permanent ineligibility to retake the test or participate in any future Upwork Skill Certification assessments. This policy will be enforced even if the results have already been communicated to you. We strongly encourage you to produce original work to uphold the standards and credibility of the certification.
