I am a lifelong amateur musician. I play drums in several local jam band style groups. I worked in music backstage for many years in many capacities since I was a teenager, but mostly as something called a "Rigger". I was a founding partner and leader of an independent record label for about ten years in the mid to late 90s. We were the first indie label distributed on the then new iTunes. I got to be backstage at almost every show of any size that toured in the late 80s and 90s. Then I personally experienced how iTunes (and, surprisingly, 9/11) totally altered the music business.   Now I am semi- retired, I do a lot of creative writing, but I also do occasional EPK prep and marketing consults for musicians.        What I am listening to:   - I just saw Yonder Mountain String Band (they are in my wheelhouse but not my favorite style) so I've been listening to them a bunch this week.  Not sure why every instrument has to do a solo in every song in that porch music, but they are a killer group of individually amazing musicians. Always demand they let the fiddle guy sing one. Wow.    - A  buddy of mine opened for Dave Alvin in Arizona last week and I also used to be acquaintance/friends with Dave's amazing guitarist Rick Shea (You can see them playing  Dave's "Harlen County Line" together on screen in the Justified tv show).  Also there is this atmospheric river cycle happening in my life, and I grew up surrounded by  25,000 acres of orange groves that eventually got cut down for urbanization.   So I just listened to one of Dave's live versions of "Dry River" a couple of times.    - I saw a photo of Carrie Fisher on reddit last week and I am working with a screenwriter currently,  so we talked about her interesting and almost unknown history as a legendary script doctor and how she was a genuine muse for about 98% of my favorite comedy films of the 70's and 80's.  So I listened to the extended commentary release of Graceland about 3 times all the way through since then. You don't have to think it's the single best American Pop music album ever made - but I sure do. If "she comes back to tell me she's gone" wasn't inspired a bit by Carrie and Paul breaking up  I don't want to know about it.   - I am working on my drums stuff, so playing along with the infamous Bonham Shuffle on Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain" (which they never played live!). If you don't know about it, it's probably the single most commonly revered groove for drummers in history.   - I was playing with a novice bass player last night so I stayed up watching a few of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' absolute master class bass and drum (and sometimes guitar) concert starting intro jams to send to him for inspiration.   - Then I have been also listening, while trying to count  (but not even pretending I can play along with) the great Vinnie Colaiuta on Sting's "Seven Days" with it's special time signature.   - Which led to the studio version of Sting's "All This Time" cause I just dig everything about that song.     - Lastly, I have been absolutely hooked up with a version of Leadbelly's famous "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" aka "In The Pines", by the Final Mission Band of the Dixon Correctional Institute at Angola Prison. I have to listen online through half an episode (titled "Midnight Special") of Nick Spitzer's incredible American Routes show every time, just to hear it again. With the help of stable diffusion algorithms, I conjured up visuals that were out of this world. Think intricate patterns and mesmerizing kaleidoscopic visuals that danced in sync with the music. It was like taking a trip to a whole new dimension.   The Future of Music Integration My experiment showed me that the future of music is wild, exciting, and full of endless possibilities. As technology keeps on advancing, artists like me are going to have a blast exploring new ways to make music and art collide in ways we never thought possible. In this age of innovation, the lines between music, art, and technology are blurring. We're no longer confined by the old limits of creativity. Instead, we have all these incredible tools at our disposal to push the boundaries and create experiences that feel like pure magic. The fusion of AI and music is opening up new doors, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead.
