What happens when the client blocks the freelancer? How do we know if the client has blocked us?

When an Upwork client blocks a freelancer, it prevents messages from that freelancer from being delivered to the client.

You don't know.

Maybe the client blocked you.

Or maybe the client is simply ignoring messages you send.

Or maybe the client died.

Or maybe the client no longer uses a computer.

Or maybe the client no longer checks email messages from the email account that he used with Upwork.
